To regard work as mad and beautiful as this as anything but individual Imagination, is to insult the mystery of personality. El Greco re-creates the world, in pure, lonely, fantastic arbitrariness. His art does not represent the secret Truth of the Universe, or the Everlasting Movement; it represents the humour of El Greco. Every artist mesmerizes us into his personal vision.
I have taken to my solitude, such as it is, from an indolent turn of mind, and this solitude I sweeten by an imaginative sympathy which re-creates the past for me, the past of the world, as well as the past which belongs to me as an individual, and which makes me independent of the passing moment.
"Possibly," said my father, mildly. "I should like to hear what you have to say upon honor. I am sure it would very much edify us all." "Gentlemen," began the Captain, at the distinct appeal thus made to him, "Gentlemen, God made the earth, but man made the garden. God made man, but man re-creates himself." "True, by knowledge," said my father. "By industry," said Uncle Jack.
If it is folly to draw an indictment against a nation, it is greater folly to indict all modern civilization. We must not say that philosophy and the fine arts took a wrong turn at the Renaissance, at least it is useless to call on them now to turn back. The world seldom turns back. It absorbs, it re-creates, it brings new significance into the older thought.
"And me, too," sez I. "If you call it re-creatin' to go to the Poor Man's Club sober and sane," sez Arvilly, "and stagger home at midnight crazy drunk, I say he hain't no right to re-create himself that way; he re-creates himself from a good man and worthy member of society into a fiend, a burden and terror to his family and community.
It does not gloss or interpret the fact of life, but re-creates it and charges the fact itself with the poet's own sense of ultimate values. This will be less precise than the definite assertions of allegory; but for that reason it will be more deeply felt. The values will be emotional and spiritual rather than intellectual.
To do this requires a peculiar gift, one which our essayist has to an unusual degree an imagination that goes straight to the heart of whatever he writes about, combined with a verbal magic that re-creates what he has seen. Things are felicitously seen by Mr. Burroughs, and then felicitously said.
He seemed stricken dumb with astonishment, his lips moved, but no word issued from them. "You believe me now, do you not?" she said "We have nothing further to do but to steer. The force we use re-creates itself as it works it cannot become exhausted.
The old delight of the playground must be called back by the man, and must be at the command of the man. The boy's play, in a real sense, creates the man; the man's play re-creates him by re-vitalising him, refreshing him and restoring to him that delight in activity for its own sake which is the evidence of fresh impulse.
Mankind has always been somewhat inclined to forgive the adventurer who destroys or re-creates, but there is nothing inspiring about the adventurer who merely preserves. We have sympathy with the rebel who aims at reconstruction, but there is something repugnant to the imagination in the rebel who rebels in the name of compromise.
