The suffering Victim, bound and scourged and crucified, recurring year after year as the centre-figure of a thousand ritual processions, would at last be dramatized and idealized in the great race-consciousness into the form of a Suffering God a Jesus Christ or a Dionysus or Osiris dismembered or crucified for the salvation of mankind.

That claim she will press, too, in questions affecting the status and rights of her people in the Dominions and in the Colonies with the insistence born of a new sense of nationhood which has intensified a much older race-consciousness.

A Frenchman does not, for he is better trained to perceive the continuity and integrity of race-consciousness, in the whole field of its manifestation. He does not feel, as many Americans do, that they are turning their back on life when they turn to books. Perhaps the truth is that although we are a reading people we are not yet a book-loving people.

You will always hear odious comparisons made in the Near East between Greek and Turk, to the disadvantage of the former. But it seems rather absurd. The Turk, at his best, is a child or a legendary hero not one of ourselves whereas the Greek is a serious European with a race-consciousness of civilization thousands of years old.

But that is not the best sort of writing-room for lyric poets, particularly in a decade when acute self-consciousness, race-consciousness and even coterie-consciousness are exploited for commercial purposes, and the "lutanists of October" are duly photographed at their desks. Mere Technique

But if we wish to trace the links by which our thought operates upon the physical body, we find ourselves compelled to postulate yet another intermediary, what I have spoken of as the "Vital Soul" a vehicle which does not consciously think, but in which what we may call race-consciousness becomes centred in the individual.

It comes down very glorious, because the strongest feeling in Irish hearts was Irishism, race-consciousness. Whereas the Latin Church was fiercely against antiquity and all its monuments, the Celtic Church in Ireland was anxious above all things to preserve Celtic antiquity, having first brought it into line with the one true faith. The records had to be kept, and made to tally with the Bible.

"That a very real problem exists in the race-consciousness of the white and coloured peoples is evident, is sometimes painfully evident, sometimes dangerously so. There is nothing to be gained by under-estimating its deep-seated nature and the gravity of its issues." This is a quotation from the presidential address given by Dr.

Because of the astral mold, certainly. It is race-consciousness that makes race, and not the other way; and there is something behind that makes race-consciousness; so that even where calamity has smashed up the latter and put it altogether in abeyance, the seeds of it remain, in the soil and on the inner planes, to sprout again in their day; when the Crest-Wave rolls in; when Souls come to revive them.

Wonderful ones always came to me, if I called to them thoughts all glittering like angels. They seemed to bring me new ideas about things I'd been born knowing beautiful things, which I feel somehow have been handed down to me in my blood." "Why, that's the way my friends used to talk about 'waking their race-consciousness. But it only led to bridge, with them."
