As far north from the schoolhouse as Thrums is south of it, nestles the little village of Quharity, and there the Fast Day was not a day of fasting. In most cases the people had to go many miles to church. Without "the tents," therefore, the congregation, with a long day before them, would have been badly off. Sometimes one tent sufficed; at other times rival publicans were on the ground.
I shook Gavin awake, and even as I shook him demanded a knowledge of all that had happened since we parted at Nanny's gate. "How long ago is that?" he asked, with bewilderment. "It was last night," I answered. "This morning I found you senseless on the hillside, and brought you here, to the Glen Quharity school-house. That dog was with you."
"Was you ever at the Spittal, Mr. Dishart?" he asked. "Lord Rintoul's house at the top of Glen Quharity? No." "Hae you ever looked on a lord?" "No." "Or on an auld lord's young leddyship? I have." "What is she?" "You surely ken that Rintoul's auld, and is to be married on a young leddyship. She's no' a leddyship yet, but they're to be married soon, so I may say I've seen a leddyship.
Something of the kind had happened, but I did not believe it then; with little wit I pointed to the shallow Quharity. "It may come down at any minute," the farmer answered, "and syne, mind you, you'll be five miles frae Waster Lunny, for there'll be no crossing but by the Brig o' March. If you winna come, I maun awa back.
One black-fisher, a noted character, was nicknamed the "Deil o' Glen Quharity." He was said to have gone to the houses of the bailiffs and offered to sell them the fish stolen from the streams over which they kept guard. The "Deil" was never imprisoned partly, perhaps, because he was too eccentric to be taken seriously.
Sandys had kicked him into a standing posture and then left him. But this clemency had been ill repaid. Stroke had not returned to France. He was staying at the Quharity Arms, a Thrums inn, where he called himself McLean. It had gone through the town like wildfire that he had written to someone in Redlintie to send him on another suit of clothes and four dickies.
Birkie, Francie, etc., in a new light; this was because when he wanted back the shilling which he had contributed to the funds for buying their purchases, Tommy replied firmly: "I canna give you the shilling, but I'll give you the lantern and the tartan cloth we bought wi' it." "What use could they be to me at Glen Quharity?" Gav protested.
Now dismally fallen into disrepute, often indeed a domicile for cattle, the ragged academy of Glen Quharity, where he held despotic sway for nearly half a century, is falling to pieces slowly in a howe that conceals it from the high-road.
The drought was to him as serious a matter as death in the house, and as little to be forgotten for a lengthened period. "There's to be a prayer-meeting for rain in the Auld Licit kirk the night," he told me as I escorted him as far as my side of the Quharity, now almost a dead stream, pitiable to see, "and I'm gaen; though I'm sweer to leave thae puir cattle o' mine.
It is, however, currently believed among those who knew him best that he jerked himself along in that way when he applied for the vacancy in Glen Quharity school, and that he was therefore chosen from among the candidates by the committee of farmers, who saw that he was specially constructed for the district.
