After a century of intensified exploitation of the natural environment, entire communities are reacting with dismay and disgust against the resulting pollution of air, water and land, the wanton waste of soil fertility, forests and minerals, and extermination of various forms of "wilderness." Freedom to exploit nature's storehouse has not brought happiness.

"Madame la Vicomtesse has seen more in seven years than most of us see in a lifetime," he said. "She has beheld the glory of France, and the dishonor and pollution of her country. Had the old order lasted her salon would have been famous, and she would have been a power in politics." "I have thought that the Vicomtesse must have had a queer marriage," Nick remarked. Monsieur de St. Gre smiled.

But the upright man glorifies God's justice, by confessing to God the vileness and pollution of his state and condition: he glorifies God's mercy, by acknowledging, that that, and that only, as communicated of God by Christ to sinners, can save and deliver from the curse of the law.

Whene'er this stone, now hid beneath the lake, The horse shall trample, or the plough shall break, Then, O my country! shalt thou groan distrest, Grief swell thine eyes, and terrour chill thy breast. Thy streets with violence of woe shall sound, Loud as the billows bursting on the ground. Then through thy fields shall scarlet reptiles stray, And rapine and pollution mark their way.

Cooperation with other maritime powers is necessary for complete protection of our coast waters from pollution. Plans for this are under way, but await certain experiments for refuse disposal. Meantime laws prohibiting spreading oil and oil refuse from vessels in our own territorial waters would be most helpful against this menace and should be speedily enacted.

"I, whom you behold in these black garments of the priesthood I, who ascend the sacred desk, and turn my pale face heavenward, taking upon myself to hold communion in your behalf with the Most High Omniscience I, in whose daily life you discern the sanctity of Enoch I, whose footsteps, as you suppose, leave a gleam along my earthly track, whereby the Pilgrims that shall come after me may be guided to the regions of the blest I, who have laid the hand of baptism upon your children I, who have breathed the parting prayer over your dying friends, to whom the Amen sounded faintly from a world which they had quitted I, your pastor, whom you so reverence and trust, am utterly a pollution and a lie!"

That mother who intrusts her daughter to a nunnery school, is chargeable with the high crime of openly conducting her into the chambers of pollution, and the path to irreligion, and the bottomless pit.

You were not formed for this! You have a mind that might have been the fit companion of divine natures! It may be still! Awake! View the light, and turn from crimes, pollution, and abhorrence, to virtue, love, and truth! Know you not the beaming charity of her whom you persecute, if Oh God! Surely this is vain terror! Surely Anna St. Ives is still among the living!

This paragraph, which is much expanded from F of F B, may be compared with the discussion of good and evil in Julian and Maddalo and with Prometheus Unbound and A Defence of Poetry. In the revision of this passage Mathilda's sense of her pollution is intensified; for example, by addition of "infamy and guilt was mingled with my portion." Some phrases of self-criticism are added in this paragraph.

I will not give my own, but scriptural answers to both. The former is answered, 1 Tim. v. 22, Be notpartaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” It is sin to dispense ordinances to the unworthy, whether ordination, or communion in the sacrament. For the other, the pollution of ordinances is the Scripture language.
