The drive from the club to the plage is charming. Sometimes through pretty narrow roads with high banks on each side, with hedges on top, quite like parts of Devonshire, and nice, little, low, whitewashed cottages with green shutters and red doors, much more like England than France. We stopped at a cottage called the Dickens House, where Charles Dickens lived for some time.
To his own notable surprise, General Frayling, on the morning following his wife's Cinderella dance, awoke to find himself the centre of interest in the life of the pretty pavilion situated in the grounds of the Hôtel de la Plage.
Michael was not of the absent-minded type. Armanches was a tiny place on the Normandy coast, in reality not much more than a fishing village, but its possession of a beautiful plage smooth, fine, golden sands brought many visitors to the old-fashioned hostelry it boasted.
He said to me once, when we had been driven off the plage at Mentone by two American tourists of the worst type, who at a hundred yards' distance from each other were yelling their views as to which hotel they proposed to meet at for lunch, "I can never forget that when I was a young man in the full vigor of my health I used to regard other people's complaints about noise as being merely an affectation.
There is a great clearing out always by the first of September and then the place was enchanting bright, beautiful September days, one could still bathe, the sun was so strong; and the afternoons, with just a little chill in the air, were delightful for walking and driving. There was a pretty Norman farm just over the plage at the top of the falaise where we went sometimes for tea.
His voice, as it rolled out the words of his cry, was as staccato in pitch as any organ can be whose practice is largely confined to unceasing calls for potations. To the listening crowd, the thick voice was shouting: "Madame Tricot a la messe dimanche a perdu une broche or et perles avec cheveux Madame Merle a perdu sur la plage un panier avec un chat noir "
Vane felt the stinging pain in his right shoulder, and then he looked foolishly at the gas expert . . . "You were saying," he began . . . But his late companion had taken a machine-gun bullet through his heart. The beach at Paris Plage is associated in the minds of most people who went there before the war with a certain amount of gaiety.
"I don't think they would get rid of him very easily. We shall know more when we get there." They clattered on to the plage, and the cold sea wind blew in upon them. Noel snuffed it appreciatively. "Smells decent, anyway. Wonder if they're still running the same old show. I say, Chris, do you remember the Goat?" Chris did.
It were far fitter that Cartier instead of Chateaubriand should have been buried out on the "Plage" beyond the ramparts, exiled for a part of every day by the sea, for the amphibious life of this master pilot, going in and out of the harbor with the tide, had added to France a thousand miles of coast and river, had opened the door of the new world, beyond the banks of the Baccalaos, to the imaginations of Europe, and unwittingly showed the way not to Asia, but to a valley with which Asia had nothing to compare.
By luncheon time, however, Henrietta was altogether herself, save for a pretty pensiveness, and emerged with all her accustomed amiability from this temporary eclipse. The Fraylings occupied a small detached villa, built in the grounds of the Hôtel de la Plage a rival and venerably senior establishment to the Grand Hotel situate just within the confines of St.
