Before we had gone far, evidence became plentiful, not only of turkeys, but of peccary and deer. Where the turkeys had recently been scratching, many times we dismounted and led our horses but either the turkeys were too wary for us, or else we had been deceived as to the freshness of the sign.

Arthur had turned round to speak to Tim, when I heard him whisper, "See, see! look at that creature!" Casting my eyes in the direction in which he pointed, I beheld a large jaguar stealing cautiously along towards one of the peccaries which lay wounded on the ground. We kept perfectly silent, as we hoped the jaguar would not only carry off the dying peccary, but a few of its living companions.

"I have killed a dozen; and I should be glad if I could get a few slices off one of them roasted, and handed up to me, for the exercise and excitement have increased my hunger wonderfully," answered the padre; and he again fired, and sent a peccary rolling over on its back. It appeared, after all, that though he had killed so many, the furious herd was as numerous as ever.

The only way in which a large animal can rid itself of the pest is by going into the water or wallowing in the mud; and this perhaps accounts for the more or less aquatic habits of the jaguar, aguara-guazu, the large Cervus paluclosus, tapir, capybara, and peccary.

His eyes, as we could see, were set upon the unconscious peccary; and his legs were strained down as he moved so that one would have fancied he was crawling upon his belly. His long tail, stretched away behind him, was gently waving from side to side exactly after the manner of a cat when stealing through the stubble upon the basking partridge.

Each time I fired I killed a peccary; but we calculated that when I had fired the last shot I could venture on, there would still remain upwards of forty of our fierce little assailants a number sufficient to kill every one of us, should we descend to the ground. We sat still for some minutes, considering what was best to be done.

The similarity of the leaves to the head or other parts of deer or peccary or red-gilled fish, decides the most favorable choice, and the acrid, smarting juice of the tuber rubbed into the skin, or the hooks and arrows anointed, is considered sufficient to produce the desired result.

"Well, one day a herd of peccaries wah a gruntin' and squealin' around the prairie, huntin' for something to eat as usual, when a cyclone come lumberin' along. "It come bringin' everything with it it could bring; houses, bahns, chicken coops and a plentiful sprinklin' of human bein's, to liven up things a little. A cyclone ain't very particular, any more than a peccary.

On the last day but one before the jungle's end was reached Warruk came upon the vanguard of the peccary herd. There were several hundreds of the ferocious little beasts scattered over a wide area uprooting the succulent sprouts that grew luxuriantly among the undergrowth. The cub did not suspect that the band was so large, for there was no indication of its great number.

On the branches that overhang the silent pool we may see the "water-boa," of huge dimensions, watching for his prey the peccary, the capivara, the paca, or the agouti; and in the dry forest we may meet with his congener the "stag-swallower," twined around a tree, and waiting for the roebuck or the little red-deer of the woods.
