I am not pleading for any mawkish sentimentality, but for a manly peacefulness which comes from holiness. The holiest natures are always the most generous. What a contrast the Church ought to present to the prevailing tone in the world! Does it? Why not? Because we do not possess the 'salt. The dove flees from the cawing of rooks and the squabbling of kites and hawks.
The peoples showing this connection between external and internal peacefulness on the one hand, and superior morality on the other, are of various races.
Ships have been in great peril from them, and fish have often had the life beaten out of them in such a sea. Yet, naughty fellow that I was, no great harm came to me. As soon as I saw my chance, head down I plunged, out of the harsh circle of the storm. Oh, the peacefulness and the restfulness of those quiet lower regions!
Good-night Shut my door fast that I may not have the trouble to rise. I left him with the warm lamplight falling on his forehead, and books piled and sloped, shut and open; an enviable picture to one in my condition. The peacefulness it indicated made scholarship seem beautiful, attainable, I hoped.

With the saddening secret, which had so long pressed upon his mind, he seemed to have thrown off his old nature, as a cast skin: and now he was all frankness for reserve, all piety for profaneness, all peacefulness for blusterings and wrath.
Even in his latest years Bryant used to declare that his favorite among his poems although it is one of the least known was 'Green River'; perhaps because it recalled the scenes of young manhood, when he was about entering the law, and contrasted the peacefulness of that stream with the life in which he would be
I suppose I knew him better than anyone on his beat here, for I fell in love with his dog, and with himself, too, for that matter, for, in the first place, he was old, and whoever saw a white head and didn't love it, and whoever looked upon a wrinkled face and didn't wish to kiss it, if it was peaceful, and the old man's head was as white as snow is, and the peacefulness of a sleeping child hovered over the sadness of his face, albeit the shadow of a sorrowful past lay darkly resting upon it.
I would not for the world have forgotten their commissions, or lost their little letters, for all the Benbows and Crosses in the world. But I was confident in my home-comfort and peacefulness.
