Virtue is something which it would be impossible to over-rate if it had not been over-rated. The world can ill spare any vice which has obtained long and largely among civilised people. Such a vice must have some good along with its deformities. The question "How, if every one were to do so and so?" may be met with another "How, if no one were to do it?"

After this they began to over-rate their importance, to rise in their demands, and to think so highly of their trade and alliance, as to deem it impossible for Britain to support her credit without them. In vain did the mother country rely upon their gratitude for past favours, so as to expect relief with respect to her present burdens.

Most of the troubles of human life, especially those of the most serious and pressing sort, are of a purely practical character, to be met and mastered, not with improved theory, but with better directed action. It is, of course, impossible to over-rate the value of right principles and correct methods of procedure. Light may be undervalued, neglected, despised; but it can never lead astray.

A smile of contempt parted his lips. "You hesitate? You think I am still a weakling? You over-rate your beauty, Lady Elza.... Make haste, I command you. We must start very soon." She summoned her voice. "Start? Where? What are you " "No questions, Lady Elza. Not now. Make haste " He jerked from her the fur covering, flung it across the room, and with the same gesture turned away impersonally.

I do not mean a propensity merely to over-rate its pleasures and its honors, but a disposition to yield to its dominion over the mind, to indulge a too earnest desire of standing well with it, to cherish a too anxious regard for its good opinion?" "The knowledge of the disease," replied the worthy Doctor, "should precede the application of the remedy.

As this is not a political article the simple indication of these two causes will suffice, without entering into the question of their reasonableness or of their justice. The social bearing of such a condition is here the only side of the question under discussion; it is difficult to over-rate the influence that a man's family exert over his decisions.

"I hope and trust I am not too broad," continued Lady Jane, with a very proud and proper look; "but I own, I think there is as much indelicacy in a young lady's hanging back too much as in her coming too forward. And gentlemen are apt to over-rate their consequence as much, if they find you are afraid to speak to them, as if you were to talk like Miss Falconer herself."

I have, in the above observations, been particularly alluding to the lowest and broadest portions of it. I trust I shall be understood as not wishing to over-rate this discovery on the one hand, or on the other, to include its whole extent in one sweeping clause of condemnation. On the 14th, the wind still continued to blow fresh from the N.W. It moderated at noon, and assisted us beyond measure.

The girl has a great deal to say upon every subject, and to my knowledge is very well skilled in controversy. 'Why, my dear, what controversy can she have read? cried I. 'It does not occur to me that I ever put such books into her hands: you certainly over-rate her merit. 'Indeed, pappa, replied Olivia, 'she does not: I have read a great deal of controversy.

The present time is disposed to over-rate the intellectual virtues. No matter how unselfish a woman may be, if she cannot discuss the new music or the new metaphysical poetry, she is nothing and nobody cares for her. Centuries ago our standard was different, and it will have to be different again.
