Sergeant Madden rumbled and swung the telescope below. The surface of the planet appeared deep water, practically black beneath a surface reflection of daytime sky. The image shifted a patch of barren rocks. The sergeant glanced at the survey picture, shifted the telescope, and found the northern-most island. He swelled the picture.
The northern-most group consists of that memorable trio of Wolf's, McAllister's and Culp's Hills. There is a slender and low ridge joining Cemetery Ridge and Culp's Hill which seems to be thrown behind the ridge. Between Culp's Hill and Wolf's Hill flows Rock Creek. It is very shallow and winds through a wild ravine.
The northern-most pair is named epsilon1, the magnitudes being fifth and sixth, distance 3", p. 15°. The other pair is epsilon2, magnitudes fifth and sixth, distance 2.3", p. 133°. Each pair is apparently a binary; but the period of revolution is unknown. Some have guessed a thousand years for one pair, and two thousand for the other.
Here then, on the 19th February, 1916 a date which is destined to become historical the Germans commenced on the Western Front, against the northern-most curve of the Verdun salient, a similar attack, an attack heralded by a storm of shells thrown from masses of artillery which had been collected for weeks past and hidden in the woods in that neighbourhood.
He left this bay which still bears the name of Massacre Bay followed the western coast, and on the 5th of January, anchored near the northern-most point. Here the violence of the surf, as well as the unfriendly attitude of the natives, prevented his obtaining water, and he finally quitted these shores, giving them the name Staten-land or the Land of the States, in honor of the States-General.
With a look of stupefied amazement which, at another time I would have found laughable, he obeyed. "Hold them to my eyes," I ordered. Three minutes had gone by. There it was that for which I sought. Clear through the darkened lenses I could see the sun spot, high up on the northern-most limb of the sun.
When Jean could be shown that Wentworth deliberately endeavored to cheat her father, she would then believe that he stole the coat. She would be saved from throwing herself away, and he Hedin's lips moved, "I will hire out to the Company, and ask to be sent to the northern-most post they've got."
He soon determined, to the satisfaction of his own mind, that the northern-most of the two, and the nearest, was a lateen-rigged craft, standing, close hauled, to the northward, across his course, and that the other was a square-rigged vessel, probably a brig, under easy sail, standing in the same direction that he was.
He is the last of Earth's great martyrs; he is home; his work is done; he is where he longed to be; the Sailor is Home in the Sea. It is poor satisfaction to those that he left behind that his grave is the northern-most grave on the earth; but they realize that the sacrifice was not made in vain, for it was due to him that those who followed were able to keep the trail and reach the land again.
Even on the march, with loaded sledges and tugging dogs to engage attention, unconsciously one finds oneself with wits wool-gathering and eyes taking in the scene, and suddenly being brought back to the business of the hour by the fiend-like conduct of his team. There is an irresistible fascination about the regions of northern-most Grant Land that is impossible for me to describe.
