Perhaps it persisted still under the head of Turkey. Not least characteristic Barstein found Nehemiah's tenacious gloating over his ancient ruin at the hands of Russia. For some days the sculptor went about weighed down by Nehemiah's misfortunes, and the necessity of finding time to journey to the Minories.

He has a double receipt against this new opposition a receipt which may be summed up in the two words which the Master has given us as our watch-word Watch and pray. 'Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night. But the billows rose higher. Three mighty waves came sweeping on, and threatened to swamp Nehemiah's frail vessel.

Now, says Nehemiah, remembering all this, bearing in mind the disgrace you are bringing upon the name of Jew, I call upon you at once to give up this practice of mortgaging and pledge-taking. Not only so, but I bid you restore at once the vineyards and the oliveyards, the fields and the houses, you have taken from these poor people. Nehemiah's earnest words prevailed,

The book is not in the Hebrew collection of the Prophets. That collection was made at least a hundred years after the time at which Daniel is here said to have lived; if so great a prophecy had been existing then, it is strange that it should not have been gathered with the other prophets into Nehemiah's collection.

'But have you enough plates and dishes and tablecloths? Can you afford to buy the food, and to risk it's not being eaten? Nehemiah raised his hands to heaven. 'Not being eaten! With a family like mine! Barstein laughed in spite of himself. And he was softened by noting how sensitive and artistic were Nehemiah's outspread hands they might well have wielded the forceps.

But while, no doubt, the tone of the prayer is startling to us, and is not such as should be offered now by Christians, it but echoes the principle of retribution which underlies the law. 'This do, and thou shalt live, was the very foundation of Nehemiah's form of God's revelation.

Ye want me ter 'commodate this stranger too, ez mebbe air runnin' from them ez wants him, hey Hilary?" The grin was petrified on Nehemiah's face. He felt his blood rush quickly to his head in the excitement of the moment. So here was the bird very close at hand! And here was his enterprise complete and successful.

So he set a great assembly against them. He called a monster meeting of all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, rich and poor, for he felt that if their conduct was publicly exposed and condemned, they might possibly be ashamed to continue it. Nehemiah's speech at the meeting was very much to the point.

Hanani, Nehemiah's brother, had left Shushan for a distant land. Twelve years had passed since all the Jews in Shushan had been roused by the news that Ezra the scribe was going from Babylon to Jerusalem, and that he was calling upon all who loved the home of their forefathers to go with him, and to help him in the work he had undertaken.

Many a promising measure for reformation has come to nothing because committed to the hands of functionaries who did not care for its success. The instruments are almost as important as the measures which they carry out. III. Nehemiah's prayer occurs thrice in this chapter, at the close of each section recounting his reforming acts. The same thing is implied in its form in verse 22.
