Had Naaman's master commanded him to bow in the house of Rimmon as a test of his acknowledgment of the Syrian god, Naaman would have refused; but so long as it was a mere act or courtesy to his master, the formal act of a courtier, from which no inferences could be drawn, he might reasonably continue it.
Also between Joram king of Israel and the servant of Elisha. 2 Kings viii. 4, 5, and between Naaman "the Captain of the host of the king of Syria" and the same person. 2 Kings v. 21-23.
II. Then take another of the thoughts that come out of the incident before us. God's cure puts the messengers of the cure well away in the background. Naaman, heathen-like, wanted something sensuous for his confidence in the prophet's cure to lay hold upon.
Thou art good for many a sore, And healest many a wound, In the name of sweet Jesus I take thee from the ground. We are told that Naaman was cured by dipping seven times in the river Jordan. Certain formalities were also performed at the pool of Bethesda. Dr.
My only purpose in this sermon is to bring out two or three of these as lying on the surface of the story before us. I. First, then, God's cure puts us all on one level. Naaman wished to be treated like a great man that happened to be a leper; Elisha treated him like a leper that happened to be a great man.
Take the case of Naaman, the Syrian, who was a Gentile and did not belong to the race of Moses. Yet his flesh was cleansed, the God of Israel was revealed unto him, and he received the Holy Ghost. Naaman confessed his faith: "Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel." He does not busy himself with the Law. He was never circumcised.
Naaman will remember it, for when he came as a leper to the servant of God he was bidden to wash seven times in this river.
Now, Naaman had to be taught the lesson that he had to obey; and so, finally, he went down to the Jordan just as he was told to do. And if you will do just what the Lord tells you the Lord will bless you as He did Naaman. You may ask, "What does He tell me?" "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved."
Naaman folded the letter in his tunic, and filling a few small bags with silver and gold, and rolling up some bundles of new clothing, he put them into the wide saddle-bags of his camels as presents for the King of Israel. Then stepping into his chariot, he drove down the river valley, with his men clattering after him, and up the hills to Samaria on the watch-hill, where he delivered the letter.
A band of Syrians from Damascus would often come into a village of Israel and take the people away for slaves. One little girl who was carried off by the Syrians became a slave in the house of a Syrian general called Naaman, and was a maid to Naaman's wife. Naaman was a great man, and beloved by all, but he had a disease that could never be cured. It was leprosy.
