All parties experienced unheard-of sufferings. An Indian chieftain by the name of Mugg, notorious for his sagacity and his mercilessness, now came to the Piscataqua River and proposed peace. The English were eager to accept any reasonable terms. On the 6th of November the treaty was concluded. Its terms were these: 1. All acts of hostility shall cease.

"I say let's have a race!" cried the Engineer of a toy train of cars on the floor. "I haven't had a race with my engine and cars since Mr. Mugg lifted us out of our box. Come on! I'll get up steam and have a race." Before any one could stop him, the Engineer started his train of iron cars over the floor of the basement. Toot! Toot! he blew the whistle.

These, I saw when he stood up, he had strapped around his waist with yards and yards of twine. He was, as old Matthew Mugg used to say, a great man. He was unbelievable. And now for three days we continued our journey slowly but steadily southward. The only inconvenience we suffered from was the cold. This seemed to increase as we went forward.

"Well, at last I seem to have reached a toy shop the very place I most wanted to come to," thought the Plush Bear. "I wonder who the old gentleman is?" Had the Plush Bear been able to read he would have seen in white letters on one of the windows the name: HORATIO MUGG TOY DEALER But the Plush Bear did not need this to tell him he was in the very place he wished to be.

With that Topsy bent over and pulled one of the ears of Tumbling Tom. "Hey there! Stop it!" cried that toy, and he leaned over to tickle Topsy, but he leaned too far and down he fell. "Ha! Ha! Ha!" laughed the black Doll. "Golly, I's mischievous; but mah black won't rub off! Look!" Topsy took up from the shelf a piece of the white paper Mr. Mugg used to wrap up the toys when they were purchased.

Mugg, when he and his daughter reached the toy shop. "That little girl who was going to buy her may see the Cat and come in for her." So the China toy was again put in the show window of the shop, which had been cleaned and put to rights after the fire. In the same window was some doll's furniture, and on the bureau was a looking glass. The China Cat caught a glimpse of herself.

"Now some girl or boy will buy me, I hope, and I shall have more adventures," thought the new toy. The Plush Bear, who was taken from his box by Angelina, one of Mr. Mugg's daughters, was placed safely on a shelf, and the unpacking of the toys went on. It was evening, and the store was closed for the day. But Mr. Mugg took this time to open his new shipment of Christmas goods.

Angelina and Geraldine looked at the toy train which had caused the excitement. It was a new engine and cars that had been unpacked that evening by their father. Mr. Mugg had wound up the spring in the engine, which was very much like a real one, with a bell, whistle, and even an iron Engineer in the cab. The toy train, all wound up and ready to go, had been left on the floor in a rear room.

"We called right after the fire, but everything was so upset we did not come in." "Oh, wasn't that fire dreadful!" sighed Mr. Mugg, raising his hands. "I thought my whole place would burn! But the firemen carried out a lot of the toys, and though this white China Cat was stolen, I have her back. So you want her, do you, little girl?" he asked.

I was surprised to find how roomy and big she was inside. I think Joe must have told everybody in the town about our coming voyage, because there was always a regular crowd watching us when we brought the things down to put aboard. And of course sooner or later old Matthew Mugg was bound to turn up.
