In the estimation of art connoisseurs, Blanche McManus is an artist of unquestionable talent and varied composition, who has already done much striking work. Her execution in the various branches has attracted international attention. "She paints well in water-colors and in oil, and her etching is considered excellent.
McManus had somehow managed to restore her courage, which had fallen low, and she dared to hope that this new line would offer her something. Some time she spent in wandering up and down, thinking to encounter the buildings by chance, so readily is the mind, bent upon prosecuting a hard but needful errand, eased by that self-deception which the semblance of search, without the reality, gives.
"Did you pipe the sassy half-sheets Mr. McManus got out for the Friar Festival? Ain't they just too pretty for words? Do you know who that guy reading the Friar song down in the corner is? Don't breathe a word and I'll tell you. It's Phil Mindel. Honest it is. George sketched it from life one night over at the Booze Arts.
"'And where is he now? "'Oh, troth, he's there safe. Divil a fear he'll get out. "'Where? said Mac. "'In the river, yer honor. "'What have you done, you scoundrel? "And faith so they did; and if he wasn't a good swimmer and got over to Moystown, there's little doubt but he'd have been drowned, and all because Peter McManus could not express himself like a Christian."
So far as Timothy McManus was concerned, the dapper young man was destiny; for as Tim passed him, the young man, with utmost deliberation, thrust his cane between Tim's flying legs. Tim sailed through the air in a headlong pitch, struck spread-eagled on his face, and plowed along in a cloud of dust. There was an instant of vast and gasping silence.
Three-quarters is too short for him." "He can't get going under half a mile!" supplemented Porter. "Well," apologised McManus, "I like to figure all the angles."... Old Man Curry also liked to figure all the angles.
"What's the use of worrying about Elisha?" asked McManus. "Curry hasn't started him yet at the meeting. He's trying to pick up some dough with Elijah and Isaiah and the others. They ain't so very much." "Well, Elijah would have been right up there to-day if it hadn't been for a little timely interference now and then." Johnson grinned broadly as he spoke.
One of our crowd camped here one summer, and we named it after him. I'll take a cup of that coffee, if you don't mind." This to Saxon. "And then I'll show your husband around. We're pretty proud of this cove. Nobody ever comes here but ourselves." "You didn't get all that muscle from bein' chased by McManus," Billy observed over the coffee. "Massage under tension," was the cryptic reply.
Captain John D. Kennedy, Kershaw County. Captain W.H. Casson, Richland County. Captain William Wallace, Richland County. Captain John Richardson, Sumter County. They were afterwards joined by companies under Captain Cuthbert, Charleston. Captain Rhett, Charleston. Captain Haile, Kershaw. Captain McManus, Lancaster. Captain Hoke, Greenville.
It was to be a combined movement; Lord Ancram, posted with his militia and dragoons at the bridge of Scaramalsh, where the poetic Banna joins the Slaney, was to prevent the arrival of succours from Vinegar Hill; Captain McManus, with a couple of companies of yeomanry, stationed at another exposed point from which intelligence could be obtained and communicated; while the General and Colonel Walpole, marched to the attack by roads some distance apart, which ran into one within two miles of Corrigrua camp.
