The Irish, above all people in the world, hates a traitor. You can't hold them back when a traitor of any kind is in sight and, rememberin' old Ireland, they take particular delight in doin' up a political traitor. Most of the voters in my district are Irish or of Irish descent; they've spotted "The" McManus, and when they get a chance at him at the polls next time, they won't do a thing to him.

Cornelius Hartnett, Hugh Waddell, and Terence Sweeny, all Irishmen, were members of the Court, and among the members of the provincial assembly I find such names as Murphy, Leary, Kearney, McLewean, Dunn, Keenan, McManus, Ryan, Bourke, Logan, and others showing an Irish origin.

And my name ain't Maudy, if you please; it's Ruby Delamere." "That's a swell handle," said Cork approvingly. "Mine's McManus Cor er Eddie McManus." "Oh, you can't help that," laughed Ruby. "Don't apologize." Cork looked seriously at the big clock on Rooney's wall. The girl's ubiquitous eyes took in the movement.

Cork handed back the money without a word. The girl took it and slipped it slowly into her hand-bag. Her expression was the same she had worn when she entered Rooney's that night she looked upon the world with defiance, suspicion and sullen wonder. "I guess I might as well say good-bye here," she said dully. "You won't want to see me again, of course. Will you shake hands Mr. McManus."

Cork McManus and the bookbindery girl conversed absorbedly, with their elbows on the table. Their glasses of beer were pushed to one side, scarcely touched, with the foam on them sunken to a thin white scum.

At midnight McManus strolled around a pile of lumber near an East Side dock, and lingered in the vicinity of a certain water plug. Brick Cleary drifted casually to the trysting place ten minutes later. "He'll maybe not croak," said Brick; "and he won't tell, of course. But Dutch Mike did. He told the police he was tired of having his place shot up.

You said we'd all be in with that; there'll be a sweet price on him, and we ought to clean up." "Zanzibar is about ready," answered Johnson. "You'll know in plenty of time, and he's a cinch." "And nobody knows a thing about him," said McManus. "Good reason why," laughed Porter. "That's a pretty smart trick: working him away from the track." "It's the only thing to do," said Johnson.

Timothy McManus was no more surprised than I was." "Did they catch you?" Billy asked. "Do I look as if they did? I was never so scared in my life. Timothy McManus himself couldn't have caught me that day. But what happened afterward? I heard they had a fearful roughhouse, but I couldn't stop to see."

It was to be a combined movement; Lord Ancram, posted with his militia and dragoons at the bridge of Scaramalsh, where the poetic Banna joins the Slaney, was to prevent the arrival of succours from Vinegar Hill; Captain McManus, with a couple of companies of yeomanry, stationed at another exposed point from which intelligence could be obtained and communicated; while the General and Colonel Walpole, marched to the attack by roads some distance apart, which ran into one within two miles of Corrigrua camp.

McManus' art studies planted now so that the burg looks like a Kansas town the day after the number two car of the circus leaves. "Did you know that they are enlarging the secret tunnel in the new Friary so that Toxen Worm can get his getaway if the occasion should arise? Honest, it looks like the front view of the Hoboken tunnel. Oh, law me, what is that in the offening? Eureka!
