Actually in the world, among the thousands of people we know, how few stir in us our best, force us to our best! It is the rarest experience of our lifetimes that we meet a man or a woman who literally drives us to the realization of what we really are and can really do when we do our best.
It was arbitrary, rococo, unrelated to current conditions as a tradition sung down in a ballad, an anachronism of the heart, cherished through long rude lifetimes for the beauty and poetry of it when you consider, beauty and poetry can be thought of in this.
"No," he gloomily acquiesced. "It is only fourteen lifetimes to a man who happens to be in love." "Men are reputed to be stronger than women," she reproached him, with a look. "If a mere woman can stand a fortnight !" Anthony gasped and sprang towards her. "No, no," she cried, shrinking away. "Do you happen to be in love?" he said, restraining himself. She looked at him very kindly.
Nevertheless I cannot doubt that this process, continued during centuries, would improve and modify any breed, in the same way as Bakewell, Collins, &c., by this very same process, only carried on more methodically, did greatly modify, even during their own lifetimes, the forms and qualities of their cattle.
This world is no heaven: its pleasures do not last even through our little lifetimes. There are many fables of endless life, which in all ages have caught the attention of men; we are familiar with the stories of the old patriarchs who lived their hundreds of years; but one thinks of them wearily, and without envy.
Everything even the old chairs and tables, that had known what weather was for three or four such lifetimes as her own looked as damp and chill as if the present were their worst experience. The picture of the Puritan Colonel shivered on the wall.
There's a new one needed in the kitchen. I'll sew it up for that. Land sakes! you've got enough in this house to last ten lifetimes!" Friends came in to sit with her and brought their work. Sometimes she sewed a little, but drawing out her needle hurt her back after a while. She read her Bible and Baxter's "Saints' Rest" And she wondered a little what the other world would be like.
And my dear parents I was so young then, and they were so willing to go! No, I do not think I have ever had any great sorrow, such as blast people's whole lifetimes." "But you think you will always continue to love Archer Trevlyn?" "How strangely you harp on that string! What do you mean? There is something behind all this; I see it in your face. You frighten me!"
The main thing, after all, is not to get in one's way, not to cripple one's energy. I've got to be free that's all there is about it. I've got to belong to myself every instant." "And you know already just what you are going to do? About your writing, I mean." "Absolutely. I've ideas enough to fill fifty ordinary lifetimes. I'm simply seething with them.
"And you think that His Kingdom will come perhaps in quite a little time perhaps in our lifetimes?
