To my surprise, I there found that what I had been reading could not by any possibility refer to me, for the preface ran as follows: "In the February number of a well-known German scientific journal, Kosmos, Dr. Ernest Krause published a sketch of the 'Life of Erasmus Darwin, the author of the 'Zoonomia, 'Botanic Garden, and other works.

The American bards shall be marked for generosity and affection and for encouraging competitors.... They shall be kosmos ... without monopoly or secrecy ... glad to pass anything to any one ... hungry for equals night and day. They shall not be careful of riches and privilege ... they shall be riches and privilege ... they shall perceive who the most affluent man is.

"I studied everything in a jumble without system, without selection: chemistry, alchemy, history, astronomy, philosophy, law, anatomy, and literature; I read Homer, Virgil, Ossian, Schiller, Goethe, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Voltaire, Moliere, the Koran, the Kosmos, Casanova's Memoirs. I grew more confused each day, more fantastical, more supersensual.

Formal philosophy seemed to him to be "too buttoned-up and white-chokered and clean-shaven a thing to speak for the vast, slow-breathing, unconscious Kosmos with its dread abysses and its unknown tides. The freedom we want is not the freedom, with a string tied to its leg and warranted not to fly away, of that philosophy. Let it fly away, we say, from us. What then?"

In their respect for woman and for marriage, in their political commonwealths, in their worship of one God, and their belief in a moral Kosmos, Bunsen beholds the expression of the Divine idea within them, preparing for the more full development which is to come through the ideas and spirit of Christianity. The book closes fitly with the grand prophecy of the Völuspa in the Scandinavian Edda.

It may be that we are too far off, though, considering the vastness of the orchestra, this seems improbable. The planets also become Elements in the Kosmos, Stoicheia. The word Stoicheia, 'elementa', had long been used for the Greek A B C, and in particular for the seven vowels α ε η ι ο υ ω. That is no chance, no mere coincidence.

Thus will they expand to the amplitude of their destiny, and become illustrations and culminating parts of the kosmos, and of civilization. And the real history of the United States starting from that great convulsive struggle for unity, the secession war, triumphantly concluded, and the South victorious after all is only to be written at the remove of hundreds, perhaps a thousand, years hence.

But take the Kosmos with a grosser faith, as our senses give it us. We behold space sown with rotatory islands, suns and worlds and the shards and wrecks of systems: some, like the sun, still blazing; some rotting, like the earth; others, like the moon, stable in desolation.

The human race is a thing more ancient than the ten commandments; and the bones and revolutions of the Kosmos, in whose joints we are but moss and fungus, more ancient still. Of the Kosmos in the last resort, science reports many doubtful things and all of them appalling. There seems no substance to this solid globe on which we stamp: nothing but symbols and ratios.

Darwin's mind, and he had never so much as heard of his grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin. Dr. Krause, indeed, thought otherwise. In the number of Kosmos for February 1879 he represented Mr. Darwin did not read his grandfather's books closely; but I hardly think that Dr. Nevertheless, innocent as Mr. Darwin's opening sentence appeared, it contained enough to have put us upon our guard.
