Linked with this faith is an intense feeling of patriotism toward that larger England of his imperialistic vision. These qualities justly brought Kipling the 1907 Nobel prize for idealism in literature. He is truly the idealist of a practical age, teaching the romance, the joy, the vision in the common facts and virtues of present-day life.
If Kipling had not given us My Sunday at Home and The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney, how should we have got them? I have just read Kipling's book, Letters of Travel. Its attractive title drew me to it, and is to blame. Kipling has an uncanny gift of sight. It prompts no divination in him, but its curiosity misses nothing that is superficial.
Victor Hugo illustrated the discovery in his Jean Valjean, it was a staple with Dickens, Bret Harte's heroes are all of that type, it was the inspiration of much of Charles Reade's eloquence, Kipling has more than a touch of it, our contemporary fiction-mongers sentimentalize over it, and the train-robber in the movies usually has a full line of sterling virtues up his sleeve.
The black police hold every position of importance in the city. They fought with great bravery, singing songs written in praise of their ancestors by the poet Kipling. Once or twice they got out of hand, and tortured and mutilated wounded and captured insurgents, men and women. Moral don't go rebelling. Haha! Galloop, Galloop! They are lively fellows. Lively brave fellows.
All is over in less than two minutes and the crowd goes pell-mell back to the book-makers' enclosure, hoping for better luck over the next race on the card. If rupees were dollars, the financial aspect of a Bombay racing day would be important. Kipling wrote true when he called Bombay "India's Queen City." It lacks the depressing influences of Calcutta, as well as the odors.
Believe me, there are plenty of stories left, waiting for the man who can tell them. I have said it before, but I say it again, if I were king I would keep court officials, Mr. Stanley Weyman, Mr. Mason, Mr. Kipling, and others, to tell me my own stories.
Stalky and Co., a broadly humorous book of schoolboy life, gives the Kipling of this period, in the character of the "egregious Beetle." When only seventeen, he returned to India and immediately began journalistic work. For seven years, first at Lahore and later at Allahabad, he was busy with the usual hackwork of a small newspaper.
But a popular expedient is not necessarily to be regarded as a permanent contribution to the methods of fiction; and Mr. Kipling, in his later stories, is a finer artist than Miss Edna Ferber or any other of the many imitators of O. Henry. =The Terminal Position.= But, in the structure of the short-story, the emphasis of the terminal position is an even more important matter.
The Wonder Boot, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Blithedale Romance, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Tanglewood Tales, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Lady Eleanore's Mantle, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Great Stone Face, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Prophetic Pictures, Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Necklace, Guy de Maupassant. A Solitary, Mary Wilkins Freeman. The Lady or the Tiger, Frank R. Stockton. The Strange Ride, Rudyard Kipling.
The two men sat in silence after Charlie had finished until he said: "If I were you I'd read Kipling a good deal. He's good food for a man of your type. People don't realize what their comforts cost. I hope that when I die it will be on a Son of Martha job. I'm built that way. My people were New Englanders, then middle west pioneers, and now here I am, still breaking the wilderness."
