"I shall be up again in a few minutes, then: I want you to drive me over to St. Gwennis. Wenna, I must go over to St. Gwennis before lunch; and father won't let me have anybody to drive. Do you hear, Wenna?" Then she went out and down into the kitchen, where she bothered Jennifer for a few minutes until she had got an iron heated at the fire.
The next day, Oliver stayed around the house wondering what he was getting himself into. On Monday, when he and Jennifer were alone, she blushed and said, "God! That was wonderful, Oliver. But it will just have to be a lost weekend." She lowered and then raised her eyes. "I feel like I took advantage." "It was terrible," Oliver said. "There ought to be a law against it."
She reminds us that in their response to that atrocity the people of Oklahoma City lifted all of us with their basic sense of decency and community. Lucius Wright and Jennifer Rodgers are special Americans.
"I have no wish to disappoint your principal, or his master, the devil. Let it be to-morrow morning at sunrise in the oak grove which was once my father's wood field, each man with his own blade. And I give you fair warning, Master Jennifer; I shall kill your bullyragging captain of light-horse as I would a vermin of any other breed."
"You make it out?" said I, after a moment of strained silence. He nodded. "She has prattled the parlez-vous to me ever since we were boy and maid together." A full minute more of the threatening silence, and at the end of it we were glaring at each other like two wild creatures crouching for the spring. It was Jennifer who spoke first.
You're the short one who married Jennifer and saved her from Rupert. Cute kid, by the way." "Aha," Oliver said. That explained the identical looks of comprehension he received when Jennifer introduced him to her women friends. He is short, they were thinking. "Emma. Yes," he said to Marguerite. "Thanks. What's it like being the other woman?"
She was constantly surrounded by guards and was never allowed to leave the motel... Jennifer was told that she would not be released until she gave up her beliefs in the Buddhist faith... her kidnappers also threatened that if she went to the police they would kidnap her again and that her family would have her committed to a mental institution for the rest of her life.
Oliver drove steadily, stopping early, and taking walks at the end of each day. His mind remained knotted in Maine. He went over and over conversations with Jennifer. She had been consistent, always herself cheerfully ambitious, social, not right for him. He tried not to think about Emma. Three mornings later he found the Jacksonville Post Office. Myron's check was there; Suzanne's was not.
"Falconnet!" said he, by way of tail-piece to the oath; and I nodded. "'Twas that there same hoss-captain, sure enough, ez I reckon," drawled Yeates. "Maybe one o' you two can tell what-all he mought be a-driving at." Jennifer shook his head, and I, too, was silent.
When the day of the party came, Jennifer was happy to stay home with Emma, Woof, and Verdi. Oliver put on a warm jacket and drove to the hospital where he passed a slow two hours exchanging glances with Suzanne. Various employees made speeches, and her uncle presented awards. Dan's daughters were a hit playing a fiddle and accordion medley of dance tunes and Christmas carols.
