When it is remembered that the catalogue of the library of the British Museum is contained in nearly three thousand large folios of manuscript, and not all its books are yet included, the task of indexing any considerable branch of science or literature looks as if it were well nigh impossible. But many hands make light work.

Even when he was at Cambridge he had begun the practice without anyone's having suggested it to him. These notes he copied out from time to time into a book, which as they accumulated, he was driven into indexing approximately, as he went along. When I found out this, I knew that he had the literary instinct, and when I saw his notes I began to hope great things of him.

In indexing the museum of Doctor Stobæus, Linnæus found his bent. "I will never be a doctor," he said; "but I can beat the world on making a catalog." And thus it was: his genius lay in classification. "He indexed and catalogued the world," a great writer has said.

Nothing, therefore, could be more pleasing to me than to see the attention which has been given of late years to the great work of indexing. It is a quarter of a century since Mr.

As a matter of fact, what is impaired is interest and attention, and when the patient realizes this he is usually quite relieved. The man who has a poor memory may become very successful if he develops systems of recording, filing, indexing, but his possibilities of knowledge are greatly reduced by his defect.

Here is a fairly complete list of their expedients: "If your friend is at all clever, he should write a novel." "If he is not, there is the catalogue of the National Library: ten hours of indexing a day." "If he has ambition, let him become a wine-merchant." "No; 'Old Clo, and get his hats gratis." "If he is very plain, and has no voice, he can sing in the chorus at the opera."

Our deposits of coal and iron already under development are equalled nowhere on earth except perhaps by the unopened mines of China; and greater fields of ore and fuel than those which we are now working are known positively to exist within our dominions. The mere indexing of America's material possibilities well-nigh stuns credulity.

The man who writes a history without indexing it thereby shows his utter lack of the most essential requisite in an historian a knowledge of the art of codification. He also calls down upon his head the curses of every student who tries to use his book.

Devereux honoured me with particular attention, and their society was peculiarly useful, as well as agreeable, to me: they directed my industry to the best and shortest means of preparing myself for their profession; they put into my hands the best books; told me all that experience had taught them of the art of distinguishing, in the mass of law-precedents, the useful from the useless: instructed me in the methods of indexing and common-placing; and gave me all those advantages, which solitary students so often want, and the want of which so often makes the study of the law appear an endless maze without a plan.

It occurred to him, casually, that when Arkwright grew up he would subscribe to every reactionary doctrine set forth in the library Peter was indexing. With that thought came a sort of mental flare, as if he were about to find the answer to the whole question through the concrete attack made on him by Sam. It is an extraordinary feeling, the sudden, joyful dawn of a new idea.
