He saw her bend her head slightly in acknowledgment of the reception she received. Never before had he seen such a beautiful woman, and his heart went out to her at once. What would Whyn say when she saw her? he asked himself. Then a doubt flashed into his mind. Would this marvellous woman listen to him? Would she be willing to go all the way to Hillcrest to sing to a helpless girl?
To be so guarded and cared for never ceased to be exciting. "And now for my surprise! It's a corker this time, Joyce." Gaston walked to the lean-to room and brought out two boxes. "Take them to your room, and put them on," he said. There were always surprises when Gaston returned from Hillcrest.
The Bigbee place was more extensive than Hillcrest Lodge, as it consisted of a big, rambling residence and numerous outbuildings; but it was not nearly so cosy or homelike, nor so pleasantly situated. Miss Lord's maid, Susan, was somewhat a mystery to the Hillcrest people.
He saw her, atop a rolling of the ground. She came to a full stop. He ran. He saw her turn to retrace her steps. He flung off the safety of the blast-rifle and let off a roaring blast at the ground for her to hear. Suddenly she was fleeing desperately, toward him. He plunged on. She vanished down into a hollow. Horns appeared over the hillcrest she'd just left. Cattle appeared.
"I understand," replied Dick, slowly. "Barney used to say the same about the moonlight on the view from the hillcrest above the Mill." Then a silence fell between them. The deepest, nearest thought with each was Barney. It was always Barney.
I knew enough of Helen's boys to be sure they would give one no annoyance. Budge, the elder, was five years of age, and had generally, during my flying visits, worn a shy, serious, meditative, noble face, and Toddie was a happy little know-nothing of three summers, with tangled yellow hair. Three days later I hired a hackman to drive me from Hillcrest Station.
It was explained further that the boys had collected drift-logs for the purpose of earning money to win the Lieutenant-Governor's prize. All this so impressed three lumber-merchants in the city that they united, and sent a cheque of one hundred and fifty dollars to the Hillcrest troop.
The light got red and angry as they dipped into the valley; the firs on the hillcrest stood out black and sharp, and then melted into the gray background. A river pool shone with a ruby gleam that suddenly went out, and the dim water vanished into the shadow, brawling among the stones.
"See what the newspaper says about Miss Royanna, and how she came all the way to Hillcrest to sing for the scouts." "What, is it all there, grandad?" and the boy eagerly scanned the page. "Read it, please," and he perched himself upon a chair nearby. To him it was wonderful that the paper should make so much of what the singer had done.
The dreaded ending of my vacation did not cause me as many pangs as I had expected. Helen wanted to know one evening why, if her poor, dear Tom could go back and forth to the city to business every day, her lazy big brother couldn't go back and forth to Hillcrest daily, if she were to want him as a boarder for the remainder of the season.
