With a sound half-gasp, half-cry she rocked on her feet and reeled backward into Kieth's suddenly outstretched arms. "Lie still, child." She closed her eyes again. She was on the grass outside, pillowed on Kieth's arm, and Regan was dabbing her head with a cold towel. "I'm all right," she said quietly. "I know, but just lie still a minute longer. It was too hot in there. Jarvis felt it, too."

When she recovered she said in a half-gasp, "Is this your gratitude? Where would your wife and boy be now, but for my son?" William said, "Is this your gratitude? Did I save your wife's life or not? Tell me that!" Seven relations swarmed in from the kitchen and each said, "And this is his gratitude!"

The important thing was that they were getting warmer. Then Judy suddenly nudged Tim, and Tim nudged Uncle Felix, and Uncle Felix dug his elbow into Come-Back Stumper, and Stumper somehow or other caught the attention of the Tramp a sort of panting sound, half-whistle and half-gasp. They paused and looked behind them. "He's ready," remarked their Leader, with a laughing chuckle in his beard.

I swam, striving to plan, to think where I might be swimming. Yet it was all a phantasmagoria, with only the strength of my muscles and the instinct to preserve my life remaining to direct me. Swimming endlessly ... swimming ... taking a half-gasp of breath ... swimming ... trying to think ... or dreaming ... was it all a dream?...

Whence it came she knew not, but its urgency was such that instinctively she started up and looked about her. The next instant, with a sound half-gasp, half-cry, she was on her feet, and shrinking back against her sheltering boulder in the paralysis of a great horror. There, within a few yards of her and drawing nearer, ever nearer, with a beast-like stealth, was a tall, black-bearded tribesman.

Then he gave a little half-cry, half-gasp; and from the look on his face the woman saw that he realized what was missing. He peered at her, with alert and narrow eyes, for a full minute of unbroken silence. Then, with a little movement of finality, he turned away and put down the lamp. "I regret it, but I must ask you for this this document, without equivocation and without delay."

The man looked at him with a half-gasp of consternation, bewildered by the very boldness with which he was thus set down. Betray himself he drew a long breath, as if he had received a douche of cold water in his face, which was indeed very much like the effect that this extraordinary address produced betray himself!

His answer was a sharp half-cry, half-gasp of astonishment, and the loud breathing became quite a pant, like that of an excited dog. "Here yes it is all right," came in rather a high-pitched voice, the accents being those of one not fully accustomed to the English language.
