We have the higher civilization among us, and we must try to keep down the forth-putting instincts of the lower. We do not want to see our national monument placarded as "the greatest show on earth," perhaps it is well that it is taken down from that bad eminence. I do not think that this speech of mine was very well received. It appeared to jar somewhat on the nerves of the American Annex.
An overwhelming impression of His personal majesty, and perhaps some forth-putting of that hidden glory which did swim up to the surface on the mountain of Transfiguration, bowed all these men before Him, like reeds before the wind. And though there was no recognition of His claim, there was something in the Claimant that forbade resistance and silenced remonstrance.

In the mystery of His incarnation, in the flow of His sympathy, in the forth-putting of His power, He lays hold not on angels, but He lays hold on the seed of Abraham. By our lowly trust, by the forth- putting of our desires, we stretch 'lame hands of faith, and, blessed be God! we do not 'grope, but we grasp His strong hand and are held up.
Increase of production the idol of the economist sought fresh markets, as might have been predicted. The increase of home consumption, through increased ease of living, increased wealth, increased population, did not keep up with the increase of forth-putting and the facility of distribution afforded by steam.
To the casual observer, the difference in the advancement of the two classes may not in early life be apparent. The forth-putting pretension of egoism may indeed cause it to seem the more rapidly advancing character of the two; but the progress of years will widen the separation between their paths, till it shall be seen as a great gulf, of which the opposite sides have naught in common.
Thus this hungry Man could say, 'No fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever'; and His bare word, the mere forth-putting and manifestation of His will, had power on material things. That is the sign and impress of divinity. But I pass from that, which is not my special point now. What did Christ seek? 'Fruit. And what is fruit in contradistinction to leaves? Character and conduct like His.
It was no more the syllables that He spoke than it was the touch of His hand that raised the child. What was it? The forth-putting of His will, which went away straight into the darkness; and if the disembodied spirit was in a locality, went straight there; and somehow or other, laid hold of the spirit, and somehow or other, reinstated it in its home.
"'It was the nightingale, and not the lark," suggested Colville lazily. "Oh, don't you think Romeo and Juliet is divine?" demanded Imogene, promptly dropping the question of the bird. "I don't know about Romeo," returned Colville, "but it's sometimes occurred to me that Juliet was rather forth-putting." "You know she wasn't. It's my favourite play. I could go every night.
What a joyful sense of companionship it brings to the solitary, what calmness of vision in contemplating the complications and calamities of the world's history, if we grasp firmly the assurance that the living Christ is actually working by the present forth-putting of His power in the world to-day! But that is not all.
