Those that are but reconciling, are not yet reconciled: I mean, as Paul, not yet come aright over in their own souls by faith; yet to these he imputeth not their trespasses: Wherefore? because they have none: or because he forgiveth them as they believe and work: Neither of both; but because he hath first made his Son to be sin for them, and laid all the guilt and curse of their sin upon him, that they might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Deeply touching were those fervent words read out with solemn earnestness and pathos by the young man, in the presence of those he loved so dearly, specially when he lingered on the third and fourth verses, "Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies."

A note it is which is not only fundamental but most musical, harmonious and gladdening. It recurs in the prophets: "I, the Lord, am he that blotteth out thy sins; yea, tho they be as a thick cloud, I will blot them out."

He that forgiveth always suffereth many evils. Servants and strangers and enemies always disregard him. No creature ever bendeth down unto him. Therefore it is, O child, that the learned applaud not a constant habit of forgiveness! The servants of an ever-forgiving person always disregard him, and contract numerous faults. These mean-minded men also seek to deprive him of his wealth.

No man can live in the world without sin. No man can bring his own righteousness before God. We must forgive, as God forgiveth us. To forgive our neighbour, assureth us fully that God hath forgiven us. We are tempted three manner of ways-of the devil, of the world, and of our flesh. Temptations serve against the secureness of our flesh. Temptations are not overcome through our own strength.

Hate me not rancorously because of that I did with thee; for he who hath power and forgiveth, his reward Allah giveth; even as saith the poet, 'Sow kindness-seed in the unfittest stead; * 'Twill not be wasted whereso thou shalt sow: For kindness albe buried long, yet none * Shall reap the crop save sower who garred it grow."
