Eleven o'clock came, and there were twenty-seven men in the tent. Besides these were the several officers of the regiment in camp, who were in their quarters ready for the signal. At the door of the mess tent rose a tall flag-pole, with halyards attached, which entered the tent.
But Good could not endure that because of his devotion to his king. He took his sword in his hand, girt up his garment, and threw himself after the flag-pole into the sea. The fine old warrior standing at the upper end of the long saloon, tall, straight, grey-haired, martial in his aspect and decorations, was worthy to be the flag-pole for enthusiasm.

As he spoke his prognathous jaw snapped to with a click-like sound, and in his eyes now coal-black were glints of fire.
