With regard to the attitude taken up by certain critics, that no evidential value can be attached to these references, I would point out that when Medieval writers quote an authority for their statements they, as a rule, refer to a writer whose name carries weight, and will impress their readers; they are offering a guarantee for the authenticity of their statements.
If a written history can be produced otherwise than by human agency, or if the man who wrote a given document was actuated by other than ordinary human motives, such documents are of no more evidential value than so many arabesques.
One cannot criticise the vision of a mystic one can but pass it by, or else accept it as having some amount of evidential weight. I felt unable to do either with a good conscience until I met with Mr. Blood.
* Matthew xv. 12-19. These, and probably many other things, evidential of the reality and strength of his love to Christ, Simon might have alleged, notwithstanding his late defection distinctions, which perhaps none of his fellow disciples could have pleaded; and which, had any share of the pharisaic spirit rested on him, might have induced him to claim that superiority to his brethren, which a certain church afterwards attributed to him.
That the lower classes among Jews and Greeks followed the new teaching, is much more intelligible, even without wishing to lay too much stress on the evidential value of the miracles at that time. The great majority were accustomed to miracles; what was almost entirely lacking was practical religion.
They have second-sighted men, who obtain status 'by relating an extraordinary dream, the details of which are declared to have been borne out subsequently by some unforeseen event, as, for instance, a sudden death or accident. They have to produce fresh evidential dreams from time to time. They see phantasms of the dead, and coincidental hallucinations. All this is as we should expect it to be.
The real crux of the whole problem is the disentanglement of these possible lines of suggestion and the assignment of them to their true sources. We may, the writer believes, eliminate as far as their evidential value is concerned, all physical phenomena.
The real Julie, gold teeth and all. But I quizzed the needle pusher good and plenty, and she don't know much of evidential value."
It was the more curious, that our first séance in New York, within a few days of our arrival, and in a metropolis where at the time we were absolute strangers, should have been so much more successful as regards evidential experiences. I will again quote from my diary of 1886. The medium visited on this occasion was Mrs Cadwell, who has since died.
In this great inquiry of ours we have to learn to be patient enough we might say, ignorant enough to do the same. The Early Church had a faith in Greek philosophy, which stood in its way, brave and splendid as its thinkers were. The evidential value of a good hymn book will stand investigation. In the story of the Christian Church doxology comes before dogma.
