Whatever greatly alters its degree of heat or cold, also renders it unwholesome. If too hot, it produces bilious and inflammatory affections: if too cold, it obstructs perspiration, and occasions rheumatism, coughs, and colds, and other diseases of the throat and breast. A damp air disposes the body to agues, intermitting fevers, and dropsies, and should be studiously avoided.
I saw there a young parazon cure many of the new consumption, I mean the pox, though they were never so peppered. Another did thoroughly cure folks of dropsies, tympanies, ascites, and hyposarcides, striking them on the belly nine times with a Tenedian hatchet, without any solution of the continuum.
But this only got him into worse trouble. "No, sir, you had some weak stuff, the refuse of France, which would not make you drunk." Boswell. "I assure you, sir, there was a great deal of drunkenness." Johnson. "No, sir; there were people who died of dropsies which they contracted in trying to get drunk."
If the poor could witness the white livers, the dropsies, or the shattered nervous systems which I have seen, the consequences of drinking, they would be aware that spirits and poisons are synonymous terms." They are principally recommended in female weaknesses, in hysteric disorders, and in flatulent colics. SAMBUCUS Ebulus. DWARF ELDER, OR DANEWORT. The Root, Bark, and Leaves. These have a nauseous, sharp, bitter taste, and a kind of acrid ungrateful smell: they are all strong cathartics, and as such are recommended in dropsies, and other cases where medicines of that kind are indicated.
The finger nails often show venous stasis. In these cases the blood pressure is subnormal, the pulse may be hardly perceptible, and there is none of the tension of the body from fear. The patient may be fearful, but lie is completely collapsed. Such an attack may occur suddenly in a heart that is perfectly compensating, or it may accompany general edemas and dropsies.

Do not the dropsies of the thorax and pericardium frequently exist together, and thus add to the uncertainty and fatality of the disease? Might not the foxglove be serviceable in hydrocephalus internus, in hydrocele, and in white swellings of the joints? VI. Of cold Sweats. There have been histories given of chronical immoderate sweatings, which bear some analogy to the diabetes. Dr.
