"Further, Jacobus de Vitriaco, in his History of the East, chap. 92, writes thus concerning this cave: 'There is a certain Place in Ireland, call'd St. Patrick's Purgatory, into which whosoever enters, except he be truly penitent and contrite in Heart, is snatched away by Devils, and never returns.

We cannot indeed enhance his glory by the most splendid liberalities, or the most costly offerings; but he solemnly requires, and graciously deigns to accept our penitence and our obedience. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Michael was compelling his servant to give utterance to the suspicion which had become almost a certainty in his mind. "Aiwah, Effendi. The treasure has already been discovered." "Good God! Do you think it is that, Abdul?" "Aiwah, Effendi." Abdul's voice was contrite. Michael felt as if all movement in the world had suddenly been arrested.

This latter adornment the faculty somehow felt was not properly significant of the contrite spirit befitting a boy under the ban of suspension. Paul was tall for his age and very thin, with high, cramped shoulders and a narrow chest. His eyes were remarkable for a certain hysterical brilliancy, and he continually used them in a conscious, theatrical sort of way, peculiarly offensive in a boy.

It was rather stiffly worded, and it contained a somewhat unnecessary and not very contrite apology for having seemed rude that morning in answering her question so roughly and in hurrying away. He had not much else to say, except that he was going back at once to his London lodgings in Bolton Street a hint that if Margaret wished to write to him he was to be found there.

And then into the midst of his doubts and fears, his anxiety for the future and his regrets for the past, there came such a rich and abounding blessing, such an abundant answer to all his prayers, that for a season the Watchman was overwhelmed with contrite joy.

There was a pause, a silence such as there falls at court when the King publicly reprimands a courtier. The old notary looked humble and contrite. "I am anxious about that boy, Chesnel," continued the Marquis in a kindly tone; "I should like to send him to Paris to serve His Majesty. Make arrangements with my sister for his suitable appearance at court. And we will settle accounts "

This is the Scriptural doctrine of penitence, that sorrowful, contrite, and believing attitude of the heart which is the characteristic of true Christians throughout their lives. Through penitence we become absolved in the sight of God from all guilt and punishment of our sins, and the minister, by announcing this fact, is to convey to the penitent the assurance that his sins have been forgiven.

I shan't apologize to him, Margaret, is that is what you mean. I'm hanged if I do!" "Tita my dear!" Margaret looks shocked. "I don't think you ought to use such expressions. You make me very unhappy when you do." "Do I?" Tita gives her a little sidelong glance, meant to be contrite, but too full of mischief to be anything but incorrigible. "Then I'm hanged if I say it again," says she.

Oh, marvel! surpassing thought, yet true! that things which pass between the Father and the Son, in the depths which no angel can penetrate, may be disclosed and made known to those humble and contrite hearts who are willing to make a space and pause for the Divine Spirit to speak the deep things of God.
