And he owns the half of a windmill, for which he pays two silver shillings. De Villis, c. 45. Ibid. cc. 43, 49. From 'The Casuistry of Roman Meals, in The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, ed. D. Masson , VII, p. 13. Aelfric's Colloquium in op. cit. p. 95. The Monk of St Gall's Life in Early Lives of Charlemagne, pp. 87-8. Einhard's Life in op. cit., p. 45.

There is hardly a sentence without its 'point', an expression without a vivid fancy. There are unrivalled niceties. The abbot of the Abbatis et eruditae colloquium is a Molière character. It should be noticed how well Erasmus always sustains his characters and his scenes, because he sees them. In 'The woman in childbed' he never forgets for a moment that Eutrapelus is an artist.

"God hath wrought many miracles, and He performs them every day, but these miracles have become much less important in the sight of men because they are very common... Spiritual miracles are greater than the physical ones." To modern readers the most interesting of Aelfric's writings is his Colloquium, designed to teach Latin in the monastery at Winchester.

This is the best of their reasoning, and before all fail. The Bishop of Winchester reasoneth from bare custom. Have we not cause to renew the complaint which John Lascus made in behalf of the Protestants in Germany, nulla cognitione causae per colloquium aut amicam suffragiorum collationem habita, sed praejudicio tantum ipsorum sententiam damnari. Sect. 1.

Why are modern readers interested in his Colloquium? Why is the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle important? The Norman Conquest. The overthrow of the Saxon rule in England by William the Conqueror in 1066 was an event of vast importance to English literature. They settled in France in the ninth century, married French wives, and adopted the French language.

AElfric, a tenth century prose writer, has left a collection of sermons, called Homilies, and an interesting Colloquium, which throws strong lights on the social life of the time. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is an important record of contemporaneous events for the historian.

The examiners were sufficiently satisfied with my answers to give me my degree the 23rd or 24th of April, without waiting for the colloquium and promotion, writing to me that they were satisfied with my examination, and therefore forwarded my diploma without regard to the oral examination. . .The Dean of the Faculty, in inclosing it to me, added that he hoped before long to see me professor, and no less the ornament of my university in that position than I had hitherto been as student.

He said, moreover, that he had held much converse with Swedes at Wittenberg, as well as at Griepswald, wherefore if she pleased they might act a short colloquium, wherein he would play the king. Hereupon he sat down on the bench before her, and they both began chattering together, which vexed me sore, especially when I saw that she made but small haste with her needle the while.

It is foolish to be interested in all that happens in the world; to pride oneself on one's knowledge of the market, of the King of England's plans, the news from Rome, conditions in Denmark. The sensible old man of the Colloquium Senile has an easy post of honour, a safe mediocrity, he judges no one and nothing and smiles upon all the world.

Various pieces of information about social life may be gleaned from the decrees of Church Councils, Old High German and Anglo-Saxon charms and poems, and Aelfric's Colloquium, extracts from which are translated in Bell's Eng. Hist. J.E.W. Wallis . For a general sketch of the period see Lavisse Hist. de France, t.
