And they stood still, looking sad, and one of them, named Cleopas, answered, "Are you only a stranger stopping in Jerusalem? Do you not know the things that have happened there within these last few days?" He asked, "What things?"
Amidst this scene of wonders, behold a group of females, no less similar in character than in name; Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary the wife Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. Many women are honourably conspicuous in the records of the New Testament, but never did they appear with greater advantage than at this moment.
Twenty miles was a full day's journey but it was just midnight when the two men hastened past the guards at the Joppa Gate of Jerusalem and half ran to the house where they had left their friends that morning. The building was completely dark. Not a trace of light showed through the closed shutters. Cleopas knocked sharply on the wooden door.
In the silence they heard only their own heavy breathing and realized that they were very tired. Cleopas knocked again. There was a muffled footstep inside; then the bolt scraped and the door opened a crack. "Open up!" whispered Cleopas impatiently. It seemed to take a long time for the man at the door to recognize them and open the door.
And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose, name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things?

Cleopas stopped in front of a small house. "Come in with us and spend the night, for the day is almost over," he said. With a smile, the stranger accepted. It had been a long journey, and the three men were very hungry. After washing, Cleopas brought bread and fish to the table. They lay down on the hard couches. The guest picked up a small loaf and raised his eyes to bless it.
But we trusted that it had been He which should have redeemed Israel: and besides all this to-day is the third day since these things were done." Cleopas also told the story of the women who had come from the sepulchre that morning talking of a vision of angels, with that of Peter and John, who had gone also, and found it even as the women had said.
James stared as though he had not understood. "We saw him on the road to Emmaus!" "You too!" exclaimed Peter. "He ate with us in my home," declared Cleopas. He turned to Peter in amazement. "Did you say you have seen him?" "I saw him this morning. After the women told us they had seen a vision at the tomb, John and I went to look for ourselves. They were right! The Master's body was gone.
