I had made Carton's acquaintance some years before as a cub reporter on the Star while he was a judge of an inferior court. Our acquaintance had grown through several political campaigns in which I had had assignments that brought me into contact with him. More recently some special writing had led me across his trail again in telling the story of his clean-up of graft in the city.
The mud and lighter portions of stone flowed away over the edge, or were swept off by the hand of the men employed in working it, the particles of gold sinking to the bottom of the machine, where they were found at the clean-up at the end of the day's work. The new-comers looked on with great interest at the work, asking questions as to the luck which attended the operators.
Clean-Up Day was so far ahead that the apostles of neatness and order -those who were thoroughly imbued with the spirit of the thing and realized Poketown's need had time to preach to most of the delinquents. There were cards printed, too, announcing the date of Clean-Up Day and its purposes, and these were hung in every store and other public place.
One night in his cabin on the mountain top, when the gold dust from the last clean-up had not yet been disposed of, he was startled by a noise outside. He blew out the light and hid his little bag of treasure in the ashes of his forge. None too soon, for there was a summons at the door, and when he opened it he was confronted by three masked men. With drawn pistols they demanded his money.

Of course that-all's taken from the winnings before we-all get to figurin' on the whack-up. Where's your figures? It must a' been a Goddle mighty big clean-up." The three men looked their bepuzzlement at one another.
