All Saints-Day Sermons. My heart is smitten down, and withered like grass. I am even as a sparrow that sitteth alone on the housetop Ps. cii. 4, 6. My lovers and friends hast Thou put away from me, and hid mine acquaintance out of my sight Ps. lxxviii. 18. I looked on my right hand, and saw there was no man that would know me. I had no place to flee unto, and no man cared for my soul.
We find in this vision, that when Ezekiel’s temple shall be built, princes shall no more oppress the people of God, nor defile the name of God, Ezek. xlv. 8; xliii. 7; which are in like manner joined, Psal. cii. 15, 16, 22, “The heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.

I shall now bring home the point. For, first, “The set time” to build Zion is come, when the people of God “take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof,” Psal. cii. 13, 14, 16.
I know, Sir, that to need your goodness, is to have a claim on it; may I, therefore, beg your patronage to forward me in this affair, till I be appointed to a division, where, by the help of rigid economy, I will try to support that independence so dear to my soul, but which has been too often so distant from my situation. Finding himself surrounded by peril on all sides, and representing to Louis XIII. the gravity of the situation, he cited that which had been alleged of Mdme. de Chevreuse as amongst the most striking indications of the truth of what he stated. Archives des Affaires Étrangères; FRANCE, tom. Archives des Affaires Étrangères; FRANCE, tom. cii. Inedited Memoir of Richelieu.
“When the Lord shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory”—Psal. cii. 16. The scope of the sermon is to endeavour the removal of the obstructions, both of humiliation and reformation; two things which ought to lie very much in our thoughts at this time. Concerning both I shall preface but little.
I might tell you a long story about your fine genius; but, as what everybody knows cannot have escaped you, I shall not say one syllable about it. CII. To MR. ROBERT GRAHAM, OF FINTRAY. SIR, When I had the honour of being introduced to you at Athole House, I did not think so soon of asking a favour of you.
