The air is peopled with traditions far back from the present, but with which the grave, imposing, characteristic landscape seems still to sympathize. In two days we emerged from the brown chrysalis of a New-Hampshire spring into the exultant richness of the winged butterfly, into white, fragrant fields of blossoming fruit, and the odor of tree-lilacs.

Then they shuffle out of it in a squatting posture, and as they do so they sing of the insect emerging from the chrysalis. This is supposed to multiply the numbers of the grubs.

I recognized it, let me repeat, sometimes in the survey of a rapidly-growing vine in the contemplation of a moth, a butterfly, a chrysalis, a stream of running water. I have felt it in the ocean; in the falling of a meteor. I have felt it in the glances of unusually aged people. I have been filled with it by certain sounds from stringed instruments, and not unfrequently by passages from books.

Think of what that monstrosity must have been when it passed out from the chrysalis and became a full-fledged living being. One part of it trying to get away from the other. One wanting to fly and the other to hide. One part wanting to feed on flies and the other part in mortal terror of all spiders." "Was that really so?" inquired Will deeply interested.

Childhood then appeared to me a kind of penance which we were doomed to undergo a sort of imprisonment or chrysalis, which, like the butterfly, left us in a fairy-like and beautiful existence. Little did I then dream of the cares, and toils, and troubles from which that happy season is exempt.

One glimpse of the squadron was as a match to Feller's military passion. He swept off his old straw hat and with it all of the gardener's chrysalis. Feller the artillerist gazed aloft in feverish excitement. "Lanny has them guessing! They're bound to know his plans if it takes all the air craft in the shop!" he exclaimed. "And what are we doing?

But before we follow him into the Soudan, it may be well to dwell for a little on the distinctly religious aspect of his life. There are few young men who cannot remember having, in their boyhood, taken a caterpillar and shut it up in a box. Before long the creature assumed a chrysalis form, and finally developed into a butterfly, with a completely new power not possessed by the caterpillar.

If I have occasion to go into the kitchen at night, I find a cot there also, with no bed, and a twisted sheet upon it, which, I am told, is the chrysalis of the cook. Said cook is a free yellow, from Nassau, who has wrought in this kitchen for many years past. Heat, hard work, and they say drink, have altogether brought him to a bad pass.

Higher aims are in themselves more valuable, even if unfulfilled, than lower ones quite attained. In every Italian school the butterfly breaks loose from the chrysalis. Let us be many-sided! Turnips are good, but they are best mixed with chestnuts. And these two noble products of the earth grow far apart.

Beauchamp would not be taught that though they were yoked they stood at the opposite ends of the process of evolution. The oddly coupled pair deplored, among their respective friends, the disastrous Siamese twinship created by a haphazard improvident Liberal camp. Look at us! they said: Beauchamp is a young demagogue; Cougham is chrysalis Tory.
