On the afternoon of the same day, Admiral Cervera, who with his own hand had dragged Hobson from the water, sent his chief of staff out to the New York, under a flag of truce, with a letter to Admiral Sampson, in which he informed the latter that the lieutenant and his men were safe, and referred in terms of admiration and respect to their courage and devotion to duty.
About nine o'clock he returned to his chair in the orchestra, and settled himself to have a look at Cervera, whose act was one of the last on the program. Just at that time Chick Carter, in the overalls and blouse of a scene shifter, made his first pertinent discovery that Rufus Venner, clad in immaculate evening dress, and carrying an Inverness topcoat on his arm, had arrived upon the stage.
The situation seemed critical. Sailing just before dark, I headed northwest, apparently into the heart of the Caribbean Sea. This information, I have no doubt, was promptly communicated to Admiral Cervera.
Cervera determined upon the desperate expedient of steaming out in broad daylight and making for Cienfuegos. The blockade systematically planned by Admiral Sampson was conducted with a high degree of efficiency. Each American ship had its definite place and its particular duty. When vessels were obliged to coal at Guantanamo, forty miles distant, the next in line covered the cruising interval.
"I'll finally land you, my crafty young woman, though I lie awake nights to devise a way." Cervera gave vent to a shrill, vindictive laugh. "Do you think you can do it?" she demanded, mockingly. "You'll find that I can." "Better men than you have tried and failed." "Yet I shall succeed." "Do you feel quite sure of it?" "Absolutely."
Do you still retain them in your employ?" It was second nature to Nick to feel his way in this crafty fashion, yet he did not really expect any resistance in arresting Cervera, who now laughed and shook her head, replying: "No, I have let them go." "That so?" "I have no use for them at present." "Why is that?"
"This last move of Cervera has hurt us severely." "In what way?" demanded Spotty Dalton, the pock-marked chap who had relieved Venner's partner of the Hafferman diamonds about two weeks before. "I don't see just how, Dave." "No more do I," put in Matt Stall. "You'll see," replied Kilgore, "when I run over a few facts which led to our being here, and at work on our present game."
"To climb three stories with the tips of one's fingers and toes, however, and by means of a notched iron on the bare face of a wall, is a herculean and hazardous undertaking." While he stood, measuring the altitude with his eyes, Nick heard Cervera returning. Then a great bunch of flaming paper came flying down the well, and the detective was forced to leap aside to escape it.
During the early part of the Spanish-American war a fleet of vessels patrolled the Atlantic coast from Florida to Maine. The Spanish Admiral Cervera had left the home waters with his fleet of cruisers and torpedo-boats and no one knew where they were. The lookouts on all the vessels were ordered to keep a sharp watch for strange ships, and especially for those having a warlike appearance.
By this time Cervera doubtless had been informed that Sampson's division had gone east from Cuba, but its destination could have been only a matter of inference with him, for the attack upon San Juan did not take place till the following morning.
