He executed some pictures of Our Lady for the house of the Medici, and also other paintings for various people, such as a picture of Our Lady which Lodovico di Lodovico Capponi has in his apartment, and likewise another of the Virgin holding the Child in her arms, with two heads of saints, that is in the possession of the very Excellent Messer Lelio Torelli, Chief Secretary to the most Illustrious Duke Cosimo, who holds it very dear both on account of the genius of Fra Bartolommeo, and because he delights in, loves, and favours not only the men of our art, but every fine intellect.
"She was," writes one of the most conscientious and respectful of men, the late Gino Capponi, "heavy in feature and form, and, if I may say so, her mind, like her body, was thick-set.... Since several years she had ceased to love Alfieri." We cannot be indignant with her; she had never pretended to be what she was not.
Whereupon the chief men of that quarter, Lorenzo Ridolfi, Bartolommeo Corbinelli, Neri di Gino Capponi, and Goro di Stagio Dati, with very many other citizens, obtained an order from the Signoria for the rebuilding of the Church of S. Spirito, and made Stoldo Frescobaldi provveditore.
Capponi, however, would fain have avoided revolution could it have been avoided without sacrificing liberty.
Then Charles VIII said that thus it should be, or he would order his trumpets to be sounded. Hereupon Piero Capponi, secretary to the republic, commonly called the Scipio of Florence, snatched from the royal secretary's hand the shameful proposal of capitulation, and tearing it to pieces, exclaimed: "Very good, sire; blow your trumpets, and we will ring our bells."
Connection of the other Italian governments with the history of Florence Republics always disunited Some differences are injurious; others not so The kind of dissensions prevailing at Florence Cosmo de' Medici and Neri Capponi become powerful by dissimilar means Reform in the election of magistrates favorable to Cosmo Complaints of the principal citizens against the reform in elections Luca Pitti, Gonfalonier of Justice, restrains the imborsations by force Tyranny and pride of Luca Pitti and his party Palace of the Pitti Death of Cosmo de' Medici His liberality and magnificence His modesty His prudence Sayings of Cosmo.
He sent some, also, to various places, such as Castiglione del Lago, and one to Florence for Lodovico Capponi, to be set up in S. Felicita, where there is the panel by Jacopo da Pontormo, a most excellent painter, and the chapel adorned by him with mural paintings in oils and in fresco and with panel-pictures; which window came into the hands of the Frati Ingesuati in Florence, who worked at that craft, and they took it all to pieces in order to learn how it was made, removing many pieces as specimens and replacing them with new ones, so that in the end they made quite a different window.
In July, 1847, when the general state of Europe was bringing home to the minds of rulers the cogent necessity of becoming reformers or of vanishing, Capponi was made a councillor of state, and at the close of that year was employed by the grand duke to draw up a scheme of representative institutions for Tuscany.
GINO CAPPONI, whose death, on the 3d of February last, has been noticed in all the principal journals of Europe and America, belonged to a family that has been honored in Florence for more than five hundred years, and whose name occurs on almost every page of its history. He was born in that city on the 14th of September, 1792.
The Cardinal of Cortona, with the young princes Ippolito and Alessandro de’ Medici, fled, and Niccolo Capponi was elected President of the Popular Government. Michael Angelo was in Florence all this time.
