I uttered piercing cries; but my mother, without paying any attention to my screams, lifted me cleverly, planted two spanks behind, and passed me to the hands of Mme. Levicq that was the name of my governess. The next day my mother left me and I repeated my disturbance, crying, stamping my feet, and calling to mother Catharine and Bastien.

Her husband, father Guillaume, was the head gardener, and his four sons were Joseph, aged six years; next Matthieu, who was four; then Jerome, two; and my foster-brother Bastien, a big lubber of three months. My father and mother did not at all forget me.

The monumental hall, from which rose a wonderful stairway of white marble, up which ran a crimson carpet, was a delight to the eyes. On each landing exquisite flowers and plants were grouped artistically in pots and jardinieres. Their perfume filled the air. Bastien took her to the second floor, and without entering opened the door of a room for her.

In most of these Joan figures in a hat and feathers, of the style worn in the Court of Francis I. From various contemporary notices, it appears that her hair was dark in colour, as in Bastien Lepage's celebrated picture, which supplies as good an idea of what Joan may have been as any pictured representation of her form and face.

That done, she showed Perrine two knobs on the wall. "This one is for the lights," she said, flashing on the electric light, "and this one is the bell if you need anything. "If you need Bastien," she explained, "you have to ring once, and if you need me, ring twice." How much had happened in a few hours!

She was to ask if she might read to him. "But don't you need me, sir?" she said, timidly. "Would you not like me to read to you?" Bastien nodded his head in approval. He seemed delighted that she had guessed what he had tried to explain. "Oh, you need some time to yourself," replied M. Vulfran. "I assure you that I am not at all tired," said Perrine.

Bastien had already got himself engaged as an assistant in the prison. But alas! all their efforts could effect nothing, and the only consolation that Joseph brought back to Morainville was that he had seen its lords on the fatal cart and had received my father's last smile.

It is of course an extraordinary work when the composer's age is taken into account, but intrinsically differs little from the thousand and one comic operas of the period, Mozart's first German opera, 'Bastien und Bastienne, though written after 'La Finta Semplice, was performed before it. It was given in 1768 in a private theatre belonging to Dr. Anton Meszmer, a rich Viennese bourgeois.

"What is it, dear Joseph?" I asked; and when he could answer nothing on account of his emotion, I rose, crying: "More bad news? What has happened to my nurse-mother? Speak, speak, Joseph!" "Nothing, Mme. la Viscomtesse," he replied. "My mother and Bastien, I hope, are well. It is of myself I wish to speak."

Perrine was surprised at the tone of his reply and his smile; but she paid no more attention to it, as she was busy fussing about her grandfather so that he would not take cold. Presently Bastien came to say that the phaeton was ready. Perrine's eyes did not leave her grandfather as he walked forwards and down the steps alone. When they reached the last step a loud bray made her start.
