I wonder if it is saying too much to say that in the exercise of that power of healing and helping Bartimaeus, Jesus found some relief from the pressure of impending sorrow. Brethren, is not that a lesson for us all?

Brother! exercise that faith, and you will receive a better sight than was poured into Bartimaeus's eyes. Now, all this story should be the story of each one of us. One modification we have to make upon it, for we do not need to cry persistently for mercy, but to trust in, and to take, the mercy that is offered. One other difference there is between Bartimaeus and many of my hearers.

That is no exaggeration; it is only a strong way of putting the plain truth that Christ's love individualises each of its objects; and lavishes itself upon each one of us; as if there were no other beings in the universe but only our two selves. And then, remember too, that what Bartimaeus got was not taken from anyone else. Nobody suffered because Jesus paused to help him.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

I am glad to say that a fine of 5 pounds is levied on any one killing or capturing a red or blue bird, and I only wish that a reward were given for every sparrow killed. That pleasant writer "Bartimaeus," has in his book Unreality drawn a very sympathetic picture of Bermuda under the transparent alias of "Somer's Island."

Let Me know that first. But when blind Bartimaeus cried, Jesus smiled down upon him though his sightless eyeballs could not see the smile, there would be a smile in the cadence of His words and He said: 'What wouldst thou that I should do for thee? To this suppliant that question was a promise 'I will do what you want. He puts the key of the royal treasure-house into the hand of faith, and says, 'Go in and help yourself.

Bartimaeus in Unreality grows quite enthusiastic over these gardens, though he does not mention their three peculiarities. One is a fountain, the only one in the islands. As there is not one drop of fresh water, this fountain has its own catchment area, and its own special rain-water tank.

He upset their scheme with the simple question, 'What is it that you want? which meant, 'I must know and judge before I commit Myself, But when He said the same thing to Bartimaeus He meant exactly the opposite. It was putting the key of the treasure-house into the beggar's hand. It was the implicit pledge that whatever he desired he should receive.

He was as humble to the little child as to the learned doctors in the temple to the chiefs among the people, as to the trembling sinner and the blind beggar Bartimaeus. Let us take, then, this Prince for our example, and mind our life long what He says 'Come unto Me, and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly of heart. Will you not learn of Him, dear lady? I will, if God give me grace."

Jesus came from Jericho, where He had left Zacchaeus rejoicing in the salvation that had come to his house, and whence Bartimaeus, rejoicing in His new power of vision, seems to have followed Him. A few hours brought Him to Bethany, and we know from other Evangelists what a tension of purpose marked Him, and awed the disciples, as He pressed on before them up the rocky way.
