"I give you my honest word, Mr. Keggs," says the valet, awed, "this very morning I 'eard the old devil a-singing in 'is barth! Chirruping away like a blooming linnet!" "Lor!" says Keggs, properly impressed. "And only last night 'e gave me 'arf a box of cigars and said I was a good, faithful feller! I tell you, there's somethin' happened to the old buster you mark my words!"
"Harvey Barth could not have known anything about Joel Wormbury," added Leopold; "and he wrote his diary, it appears on the very day the Waldo was lost." "There can be no doubt that Wallbridge and Joel Wormbury were one and the same person," said Mr. Hamilton.
We wrote the maker's name in Arabic, and gave directions to have it well preserved. He inquired after Drs. Barth and Overweg, and seemed to take great interest in our welfare. In the midst of our conversation a lady, one of the Sultan's female relations, came, moved no doubt by curiosity, into the room. She was evidently a fine dame, a person of fashion in this Saharan capital.
On applying to Dr Barth for redress, he was enabled not only to restore to them their vessels, but to make them a few small presents. Descending from the high ground, they continued their course between the sand-hills and a blue inlet of the lake to the south.
Their conversation was about the prospect of catching a fare of mackerel, though Harvey Barth and his diary came in for some comments. Stumpy was Leopold's dearest friend and most intimate companion. The friendship had commenced in school, which both of them continued to attend in the winter. It had its origin in no especial event, for neither had conferred any particular favor on the other.
While they were eating, Bower and Josef Barth cast glances at some wisps of cloud drifting slowly over the crests of the southern hills. Nothing was said. The guide read his patron's wishes correctly. Unless some cause far more imperative than a slight mist intervened, the day's programme must not be abandoned. So there was no loitering.
This granite interests us, especially as in the direct Bornou route there appears to be none at all. Dr. Barth compares the Tuaricks of Ghât and the Haghar to lions and tigers, and the Kailouees to snakes. The comparison well hits off their outward characteristics, but, as Overweg says, we must not judge of these people by the ordinary rules of morality, or apply to them an European standard.
When the mate went aft, Harvey Barth visited the galley, and took from the box his diary, still carefully envelloped in the oil-cloth. This book was the repository of the few valuables he possessed, but whether it was for the diary, or the treasures it contained, that he was so anxious to save it at that trying moment, we may not know.
Soon after the party had encamped at night three strangers made their appearance; but, although they were known to be robbers, and that a number of their companions were not far off, they were allowed to lie down for the night. The experienced old Sheikh of the Kafeila warned Barth to be on his guard, and exhorted his attendants to be staunch. Everybody was crying for powder.
"This was his room," replied Leopold, as he moved towards the door. "Can I do anything more for you?" "No, nothing now. You are the boatman, I believe; and you have bought a new boat." "I bought one just before Harvey Barth left the house. Did he tell you about her?" "Well, nothing in particular, only he said you were a great boatman, and a very good boy."
