At this time a most vitally important controversy was in progress as to whether or not the veins of the bodies were supplied with valves, many anatomists being unable to find them. Etienne had first described these structures, and Vesalius had confirmed his observations.

The subject of the intellectual and moral qualities of the inferior animals is one highly interesting and somewhat misunderstood urged perhaps to a ridiculous extent by some persons, yet altogether neglected by others who have no feeling for any but themselves. Anatomists have compared the relative bulk of the brain in different animals, and the result is not a little interesting.

But a short time had elapsed since more than one of the great anatomists and physicists of the Italian school had paid dearly for their endeavours to dissipate some of the prevalent errors; and their illustrious pupil, Harvey, the founder of modern physiology, had not fared so well, in a country less oppressed by the benumbing influences of theology, as to tempt any man to follow his example.
