Of the remaining small proportion, there are on record, however, a number of carefully authenticated cases where the subject has been the victim of a sudden and complete loss of memory. This dislocation of memory is a variety of aphasia known as amnesia, and when the memory is recurrently lost and restored, we have alternating personality.
The lady came from the South, with her nurse, to Boston and insisted on being hypnotized by me. I cannot say whether a really deep hypnotic state was produced at once as I refrained from testing it. There was certainly no amnesia. Probably it began only with a slight drowsiness but at the fifth treatment I found a relatively deep hypnosis.
He discovered it by applying an artifice which he had seen Bernheim use during a visit to the latter's clinic at Nancy. Bernheim demonstrated upon a hypnotized patient how the amnesia of the somnambulist is only an appearance. With this aim in view, Freud from then on ceased to hypnotize his patients and substituted for that method, "spontaneous ideas."
"Well," I replied, "of course there's a lot of talk now in the papers about aphasia and amnesia and all that stuff. But, you know, we reporters are a sceptical lot. We have to be shown. I can't say we put much faith in THAT." "But what is your explanation? You fellows always have an opinion. Sometimes I think the newspapermen are our best detectives."
She had been well for four years at the time the report was made. He thinks that a certain tendency to exaggeration and simulation speak for hysteria. We would be more inclined to view the fact that she looked after herself in spite of complete amnesia as evidence of hysteria. Another protracted case suggestive of hysteria is that reported by Gadelius.
In the latter case it is found that this sexual period is forgotten and the conscious reminiscences pointing to them are displaced; I have already mentioned that I would like to connect the normal infantile amnesia with this infantile sexual activity.
"I can assure you I'm not one of Goat's genetic experiments," he said. "Goat and I were colleagues in this rebel movement twenty-five years ago, before I was hit by a period of amnesia that I've just come out of." She stared at him. "A twenty-five year period of amnesia? Impossible! You're not more than twenty-five years old," she said positively.
The loss of memory which Fu-Manchu had artificially induced was subject to the same inexplicable laws which ordinarily rule in cases of amnesia. The shock of her brave action that night had begun to effect a cure; the sight of Azîz had completed it. Inspector Weymouth was standing by the writing-table.
The girl who worked about his cot was without his bourne of knowledge; her voice reached him as if from an infinite distance, and her words penetrated only to the outer edges of his consciousness. It was not strictly, however, a return of his amnesia. It was simply an outgrowth of delirium caused by his sickness and injuries, to be wholly dispelled as soon as he was wholly well.
I believe that the infantile amnesia which causes the individual to look upon his childhood as if it were a prehistoric time and conceals from him the beginning of his own sexual life that this amnesia is responsible for the fact that one does not usually attribute any value to the infantile period in the development of the sexual life.
