Butter-fat is the yellow substance which forms the larger part of butter. Besides, this fat butter is composed of 16 per cent or less of water and small amounts of salt, and other substances of which milk is composed. From 80 to 85 per cent or so of ordinary butter is the fat itself. It is sold by weight. The cream from which butter is made is taken to the creamery and weighed, not measured.

The success of this great measure is best shown by the increase of letters delivered in Great Britain and Ireland: from 85 millions in 1839, the number had more than doubled by 1892.
When I had satisfied him upon these matters, he fell again into a reverie. "Well?" said I, a little sharply. "Cousin," he said, "I do not wish to stand in your way. But there must be no talk of marriage till '85. Will that content you?" It did not in the least; but it was what I had expected.
An astonishing lesson was given, when I received the order to stop the composition of the Fourth Treatise at the end of the 168th page. The manuscript for that Treatise contains 85 pages, and the 168th page of this book ends in the middle of the 34th page of manuscript. The spirit who made this provision exhorts powerfully readers to digest the 168 pages and to prepare for what follows.
Back in London, they lunched at different times with F. F. Arbuthnot, G. A. Sala, A. C. Swinburne, and "dear old Larkin" now 85 in whose house at Alexandria, Burton had stayed just before his Mecca journey. It was apparently during this visit that Burton gave to his cousin St.
Eleven of these debates were won in succession, and twenty-four by the unanimous decision of the judges. This form of inter-collegiate rivalry has been greatly stimulated by a medal and testimonial of $85 given to the winner of the annual University Contest by the Chicago alumni and by similar prizes to the winners of the inter-collegiate contests and debates.

When I placed the compass on the rock, Mount Foster bore from me N. by W., the true bearing of the one hill from the other being N.N.W. My placing my notebook under the compass did not alter the effect, nor did the card move until I raised the instrument a couple of feet above the stone, when it first became violently agitated, and then settled correctly; and my bearings of the highest parts of Arbuthnot's Range, and of its centre, were as follows: Mount Exmouth to the N ...... N. 86 E. Centre....................... N. 85 E. Vernon's Peak................ N. 89 E. Distance 70 miles.
This is about 3 miles long in an ENE. and WSW. direction by about 1½ miles wide. The northern and western edges rise sharply from the 85 or 90 fathoms of the muddy bottom about it to 60 fathoms over a bottom of rocks and stones. Easterly and southerly the ground slopes away gradually over hard gravel to 90 fathoms. Cod and hake furnish the best fishing here at its peak during October and November.
