In the same six the government kills 1,073,546 snakes. Plenty left. There are narrow escapes in India. In the very jungle where I killed sixteen tigers and all those elephants, a cobra bit me but it got well; everyone was surprised. This could not happen twice in ten years, perhaps. Usually death would result in fifteen minutes.
He distinguished himself so greatly by his mental and moral qualities as to secure the confidence and regard of Henri IV, who, in 1598, obtained for him a cardinal's hat; and in the following year he was created Archbishop of Bordeaux, in which city he died in 1628. Cayet, p. 191. L'Etoile, vol. ii. p. 546. Bassompierre, Mém. p. 25. L'Etoile, vol. ii. p. 549.
Philadelphia was the largest of these, with 69,000, and New York second with 60,000. These cities contained a fraction less than four per cent of the population of the United States. In 1900, on the other hand, there were 546 cities in the United States with a population of over 8000.
Roosevelt, had been 'reposing too much confidence in the self-governing power of a people, if to begin with the rankest material for constructing a government that there was at hand was to offer a fair test of capacity for self-government." Also: "Of course the ignorant elecorate we perpetrated on Samar as an 'expression of our theoretical views' proved that we had 'gone too fast' in conferring self-government, or to quote Mr.
Twenty previous wars Present War Total cost $26,123,546,240 $75,000,000,000 Total killed 6,498,097 5,000,000 Called to the colors 18,562,200 40,000,000 We have said that the cost of the war has now risen to the almost unbelievable total of over $130,000,000 a day. That is more than the total cost of the whole war between Russia and Turkey in 1828.
Oro and Gildenstein, the celebrated assayers, have found that a sample of rock from the Golden Mint Mine, Golconda, assays at the rate of 2,546 oz. 13 dwt. and 21 gr. to the ton, and that there are thousands of tons of similar stone in sight, the statement should be received with due caution. The assay is doubtless correct, but the deductions therefrom are most misleading.
III. X. Intervention in the Syro-Egyptian War But after the death of Marcellus in 546 re-elections to the consulship, if we do not include the abdicating consuls of 592, only occurred in the years 547, 554, 560, 579, 585, 586, 591, 596, 599, 602; consequently not oftener in those fifty-six years than, for instance, in the ten years 401-410.
