A few days later on the evening of the 6th of September the Rebel Sergeants who called the roll entered the Stockade, and each assembling his squads, addressed them as follows: "PRISONERS: I am instructed by General Winder to inform you that a general exchange has been agreed upon. Twenty thousand men will be exchanged immediately at Savannah, where your vessels are now waiting for you.

Thereupon each battalion commander marched his command in column of squads into the mess hall; battalion commanders preceding their battalions, company commanders preceding their companies and the junior officers of each company following the company. Last of all came Midshipman Cranthorpe's awkward squad. And very awkward, indeed, these young men felt.

The party was supplied with torches, and started in perfect silence. They were divided into three squads; one of eight men, led by the captain of gendarmerie, another of ten, commanded by the colonel, and the third of twelve men, with Roland at its head. On leaving the town they separated.

No other movement is executed until the line is faced to the original front. Being in column of platoons or squads, to form line on right or left: 1. Company, 4. At the first command the leader of the leading unit commands: RIGHT TURN. The leaders of the other units command: FORWARD, if at a halt. At the second command the leading unit turns to the right on moving pivot.

I saw that the Utahs had given up the pursuit. Most of them had returned to the scene of their short conflict; while others, singly or in squads, were moving towards the butte. The women, too, were approaching some with the wounded some carrying the bodies of the slain warriors chaunting the dismal death-song as they marched solemnly along.

"Putrid stink," said I; "come on let's clear out." And so our sniper-hunt led to nothing but a dead Turk stewing in the glaring sunshine. We rejoined the squads. No one had missed us. This first day was destined to be one of many adventures. That night was dark, with no stars. I didn't know what part of Gallipoli we were in, and the maps issued were useless.

Scarcely ten thousand men remained of the three hundred thousand who had started the day before in obedience to the order of the Tsar; and these were split up into formless squads and ragged companies fighting desperately amidst heaps of corpses for dear life, without any pretence at order or formation. The cannonade from the air had ceased, and the last scene in the drama of death had come.

Immediately afterwards, however, or on Saturday morning early, the provost and special police force got on the scent, and military in squads were dispatched close upon their heels. Three grand pursuits wore organized: one reaching up the north bank of the Potomac toward Chain bridge, to prevent escape by that direction into Virginia, where Mosby, it was suspected, waited to hail the murderers;

Moving through the dusk in parallel lines, he caught sight of other Throg squads, well armed, marching in order to suggest that they were not yet alarmed. However, he had been right about the ships there were no flyers grounded on the improvised field. Shann made himself as much of a burden as he could.

SQUAD LEADERS transmit commands and signals when necessary, observe the conduct of their squads and abate excitement, assist in enforcing fire discipline and participate in the firing. The best troops are those that submit longest to fire control. Loss of control is an evil which robs success of its greatest results. To avoid or delay such loss should be the constant aim of all.
