In these little matters one can only say, "some are born Rabelaisian, and some require to have Rabelais thrust upon them!" Surely it is wisdom, in us terrestrial mortals, to make what imaginative use we can of every phase of our earthly condition? Imagination has a right to play with everything that exists; and humor has a right to laugh at everything that exists.

To the men of Bidwell he was known as something of a wit, and in the winter he went to town every afternoon to stand in the stores and tell the Rabelaisian stories for which he was famous; but when spring came he became restlessly active, and in his own house and on the farm, became a tyrant. During the time of the cabbage setting he drove his sons and daughters like slaves.

There was a race for the whisky bottle; a midday dinner; an afternoon of rough games and outrageous practical jokes; a supper and dance at night, interrupted by the successive withdrawals of the bride and of the groom, attended with ceremonies and jests of more than Rabelaisian crudeness; and a noisy dispersal next day.

Men, women and children alike worked hard, and if the language of the actors was more Rabelaisian than polite, they were good fellows and heart and soul devoted to their profession. Their salaries were smaller and their lives were simpler than is the case with actors now. Kate and I had been hard at work for some years, but our parents had no notion of our resting.

To do this they prepared a ``mock programme, which, had it been merely comic, as some others had been, would have provoked no ill feeling. Unfortunately, some miscreant succeeded in introducing into it allusions of a decidedly Rabelaisian character. The evening arrived, a large audience of ladies and gentlemen were assembled, and this programme was freely distributed.

After meals we push away the dishes and sit side by side, with our arms across each other's shoulders, full of the joy of life, satisfied, happy, healthy-minded, now and then a little Rabelaisian in our talk, meandering innocent-eyed through those earthier intimacies which most married people seem to face without shame, so long as the facing is done in secret.

"Monsieur," said Chaumonot, passing over the marquis's questionable irony, "will you permit me to tell you a short story before approaching the subject of my visit?" "Rabelaisian?" maliciously. "No; not a monstrous story, but one relative to an act of kindness which took place many years ago." "Well, if I am not interested I shall interrupt you," said the marquis.

They enjoyed absolute liberty of thought and speech, tempered only by the seasoning of wit. They might well have taken for their motto the device of the Rabelaisian abbey: "Do what thou wilt." But they bragged a little: for they did not will anything much: they were like the enervated people of Thelema.

What am I saying? What are you saying? Have you hypnotised me? Curse your uncanny blue eyes! Let me go. Give me back my sense of humour. Give it me back give it me back, I say!" "I solemnly assure you," said Wayne, uneasily, with a gesture, as if feeling all over himself, "that I haven't got it." The King fell back in his chair, and went into a roar of Rabelaisian laughter.

He had been sitting at table with friends far into the night or morning. One of them, describing to him a farcical incident of Rabelaisian quality, he threw himself back in his chair in a fit of laughter, and slipping on the polished floor, was thrown with great force on his head and killed almost instantaneously.
