Dryden in this ode, which was sung in 1697, pictures Timotheus, the famous Greek musician and poet, singing before Alexander, at a great feast which was held after the conquest of Persia. Alexander listens while "The lovely Thais, by his side, Sate like a blooming Eastern Bride, In flower of youth and beauty's pride. Happy, happy, happy pair!
Butler, the author of "Hudibras," died of starvation in Rose Alley, the same place in which Dryden was beaten by hired ruffians. Otway was hunted by bailiffs to his last hiding-place on Tower Hill. His last act was to beg a shilling of a gentleman, who gave him a guinea; and buying a loaf to appease his hunger, he choked at the first mouthful.
I thought it my glory to pursue a track which Dryden and Otway trod before me. Alas, Dryden struggled with indigence all his days; and Otway, it is said, fell a victim to famine in his thirty-fifth year, being strangled by a roll of bread, which he devoured with the voracity of a starving man." In Goldsmith's experience the track soon proved a thorny one.
If English literature were really taught in schools, and the eldest boys had received training that brought them in their last school- year to a knowledge of the changes of intellectual fashion that set their outward mark upon successive periods, there is no prose writing of Dryden that could be used by a teacher more instructively than these Discourses on Satire and on Epic Poetry.
The Essay itself forms part of a long controversy between Dryden and his brother-in-law, Sir Robert Howard. At a later stage of the dispute, however, he distinguishes between tragedy and comedy, and allows that the arguments in favour of rhyme apply only to the former a curious inversion of the truth, as it would appear to the modern mind.
The Village , a poem without a rival as a picture of the workingmen of his age, is sometimes like Fielding in its coarse vigor, and again like Dryden in its precise versification. The poem was not successful at first, and Crabbe abandoned his literary dreams. For over twenty years he settled down as a clergyman in a country parish, observing keenly the common life about him.
Out of the writing which aimed at simplicity and truth to nature grew "Poetic Diction," a special treasury of words and phrases deemed suitable for poetry, providing poets with a common stock of imagery, removing from them the necessity of seeing life and nature each one for himself. The poetry which Dryden and Pope wrought out of their mental vigour, their followers wrote to pattern.
"Your hair had come undone," he said softly. "And you never looked under the violets " "I went back to look for you. I wasn't gone a minute, but you had vanished." "They took me away in the car then I thought of the story and I didn't see you again, until you brushed by me in the Dryden ticket office in New York the day before we sailed " "And you've been my good angel ever since "
This prince a priestess of our blood shall bear; And like his sire in arms he shall appear. Dryden. Scarcely was the city raised above its foundation, when its rude inhabitants began to think of giving some form to their constitution.
For a time Smith was deliberately pitted against Tennyson by "the younger sort" as Dennis says of the faction for Settle against Dryden in his days at Cambridge.
