It seems to me that there is a rather important psychological distinction between a language that settles the formal status of a radical element before announcing it and this, in effect, is what such languages as Tlingit and Chinook and Bantu are in the habit of doing and one that begins with the concrete nucleus of a word and defines the status of this nucleus by successive limitations, each curtailing in some degree the generality of all that precedes.
Sometimes he rode over to the home ranch for a day or two, but Mona was away studying music, so he found no inducement to remain, and drifted back to the little, sod-roofed cabin by the river, and to Gene. The winter settled down with bared teeth like a bull-dog, and never a chinook came to temper the cold and give respite to man or beast.
It was a sight to see him of a summer day, sitting in the shade of a pine, his shirt open, showing his firm brawny chest, his arms bare, his face shining with perspiration, his big voice gurgling in his beard, his eyes rolling amiably upon the maidens as they passed or gathered near demurely, while he declaimed of mighty deeds in patois or Chinook to the braves.
Besides, Oshondonto was so absent-minded at the moment, so absorbed in admiration of the garish scene before him, that he addressed the chief in French, of which Knife-in-the-Wind knew but the one word cache, which all the North knows. But presently William Rufus Holly recovered himself, and in stumbling Chinook made himself understood.
It mattered not to him if everybody else was killed, so long as the property and families of his friends were safe. The conversation, of course, was carried on in the Chinook language, which is a mixture of the Wasco tongue and Hudson Bay French. Captain George was, as I have stated, Chief of the Warm Spring and Wasco Indians.
I tried my Chinook and made out to say that I wanted to hire two of them in a few days to go a little way back on the glacier and around the bay. They are seal-hunters and promised to come again with "Charley," who "hi yu kumtux wawa Boston" knew well how to speak English. I saw three huge bergs born. Spray rose about two hundred feet.
Chinook is a combination of English, French and Indian words. The figure at the base of the pictographic painting represents the mammoth whale upon whose back the whole creation rests. Above the whale are seen the head and wings of the giant Kulakula the Tee-tse-kin the Thunder Bird which dwells aloft. When he flaps his wings or even moves a quill the thunder peals.
She was one of those stiff old Indians, whom we occasionally see, who do not speak the Chinook at all, and take no notice whatever of the whites. I never feel as if they even see me when I am with them. They seem always in a deep dream. Her youth must have been long before any white people came to the country.
"I could see he was making across country for the trail to Chinook, but I wanted to overhaul him and have a little casual talk about Dan. I don't suppose yuh noticed I took his rope along; I wanted some excuse for hazing after him like that, yuh see." "Uh course, such accommodating cusses as you wouldn't be none strange to him," fleered Cal.
At the end of a week this English-bred Yankee had organized the "Chinook Mining and Milling Company, Limited." This man was at the head of the scheme, with Jack Ramsey as Managing Director. Ramsey was a prospector by nature made proficient by practice. He had prospected in every mining camp from Mexico to Moose Factory.
