It may be that circumstances may take the traveller off the beaten track, and we are indebted to a friend for the following brief description of the trip from Samarang to Djocja over the mountains: I would suggest the far more interesting route via Willem I. Starting at 5.57 a.m. or 8.17 a.m., Djocja is reached at 2.16 p.m. or 5.10 p.m.

The most elaborate masters in this art were the brothers De Heem, Willem Kalf, Abraham Mignon, and Jan van Huysum. Exquisite as the pictures by these masters are, Maria van Oosterwyck and Rachel Ruysch disputed honors with them, and many other women excelled in this delightful art.

I have but to mention the names of Hans and Hendrik Von Bloom, Groot Willem and Arend Van Wyk, to make known that The Young Yagers are again on a hunting expedition. In the one in which we now encounter them, not all the parties are inspired by the same hopes and desires.

There I heard many tales of the enemy's behaviour as they passed through a week before. For some reason or other the houses there had not been burnt, perhaps owing to the verbal negotiation between Botha and Kitchener. I know of only one house that was burned down there. That was the finest house in the neighbourhood and belonged to Willem Basson. Mrs. Basson herself told me how it happened.

They appeared to act under the guidance of reason, as if knowing that they were still far from the wished-for water, and that the faster they travelled the sooner it would be reached. Throughout the afternoon Hendrik and Willem rode in advance of the others, anxiously looking out for spring, pool, or stream. The all-sustaining fluid must be found that night, or their cattle would perish.

Pushing in front of Groot Willem, Congo entreated him not to make resistance; and so strong seemed his desire that they should surrender without making an effort to maintain their freedom, that he caught hold of the gun which Hendrik had already brought to his shoulder. "Poison! arrows and spears all poison!" shouted the Kaffir, who appeared well-nigh scared out of his senses.

On reaching the camp, Willem and Hendrik found their companions anxiously awaiting their return. The horses and cattle had all been recovered, and the borele that had caused their dispersion had been shot by Hans and Arend. Its attack had caused a delay of two days, and the loss of an ox.

[Footnote 289: The Album Studiosorum Academiae Lugduno-Batavae (Hague, 1875) contains the entry of "Petrus Sluyter Vesaliensis" (i.e., of Wesel) as entering the University of Leyden in 1666 as a student of theology, at the age of twenty-one. Also, Sluyter in 1670 told Paul Hackenberg at Herford that he had studied three years in the Palatinate (without finding one truly pious pastor or teacher). Domine Selyns, in a letter to Rev. Willem

"You and I must do something to-day," said Arend to Hendrik, as they were eating their first breakfast at the new camping-place. "Yes," replied Hendrik, "Willem has one day the start of us in adventures, but I dare say fortune will favour us ere long." "She has favoured us all I think," said Willem. "How could we have a better prospect of success?
