The white pillar of rock, called Lot's Wife on the map, is about a couple of miles farther up the canyon, and near it stands the Big Tree, and close by that tree, according to the map, should be the hidden entrance to Crooked Arm Gulch.
"All it needs is to have a chain link welded or glued or something; it won't take five minutes. And the fellow that owns it is a cripple and can't go out until this machine's fixed. Now go ahead, like a good chap; I'll hold your bonnet." "Eh? What bonnet?" The little man stared perplexedly. "I meant I'd help," answered Neil unabashed. "Help! Huh! Lot's of help, you'd be to any one!
Then he ordered them to depart forthwith to their caverns, and tell their master that not to him belonged the kingdom of the sea. "Back to your master instant flee, And tell him, not to him but me The imperial trident of the sea Fell by the lot's award."
I have had a fancy that Lot's wife, when she was turned into a pillar of salt, stood yet looking over her shoulder, or else with her face towards Sodom; as the judgment caught her, so it bound her, and left her for a monument of God's anger to after-generations.
But there we read that "Lot's righteous soul was vexed," so he had a righteous soul, but he had a stormy time. He didn't have peace and joy and victory like Abram. After Abram had given up the wealth of Sodom that was offered him, then God came and enlarged his borders again enlarged the promise. God said: "I will be your exceeding great reward; I will protect you."
"I 'ope you didn't 'ear all I dreamt. 'Ow much did you hear?" Bill told 'im, and the cook sat there, shaking his 'ead. "Thank goodness, you didn't 'ear the worst of it," he ses. "Worst!" ses Bill. "Wot, was there any more of it?" "Lot's more," ses the cook. "But promise me you won't tell Joseph, Bill. Let 'im be happy while he can; it would on'y make 'im miserable, and it wouldn't do any good."
The phonolite is of a greenish-grey colour, and is full of minute acicular crystals of feldspar; in most parts it has a conchoidal fracture, and is sonorous, yet it is crenulated with minute air-cavities. In a S.W. direction from Lot, there are some other remarkable columnar pinnacles, but of a less regular shape, namely, Lot's Wife, and the Asses' Ears, composed of allied kinds of rock.
The uncle's evil career will be sketched in our series of "Bible Heroes." For the present we content ourselves with the remark that no good could reasonably be expected from such a family. Lot's father was Haran, a son of Terah, and brother to Abraham. He "died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees."
The Knight abounds in illustrations, from Lot's daughters down to his own time, for the example or the warning of his daughters. The ideal he holds up to them is strictly domestic and in a sense conventional.
Indeed "their substance was so great that they could not dwell together, and there was strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herd-men of Lot's cattle." Whereupon Abraham said "Don't let us quarrel within the family, but let us part. You can go where you like.
