On the Continent Poodles of the larger kind are often used for draught work. There can be little doubt that the breed originated in Germany, where it is known as the Pudel, and classed as the Canis familiaris Aquaticus. In form and coat he would seem to be closely related to the old Water-dog, and the resemblance between a brown Poodle and an Irish Water Spaniel is remarkable.

He told him that guests were not expected to attend the night-offices, and that indeed he strongly recommended Chris doing nothing of the kind at any rate that night; that masses were said at all hours from five o'clock onwards; that prime was said at seven, and was followed by the Missa familiaris for the servants and work-people of the house.

The 'genus' CANIS has two tubercular teeth behind the large carnivorous tooth in upper jaw; and the 'sub-genus familiaris', the DOG, has the pupils of the eye circular, while those of the wolf are oblique, and those of the fox upright and long. There has been some dispute whether the various species of dogs are of different origin, or sprung from one common source.

"And mater familiaris," added the little girl. "Milias, Corona," corrected the little boy. "Here it is, Mr. Vivian," he added, drawing a large missive from the breast of his blue-and-white sailor's blouse. "Pater and mater familias couldn't bring it themselves, because he said it wasn't safe for him to come, and she's lying down ill at what you sent to her. It wasn't kind of you, was it?"

What was a metaphysical incomprehensibility became an intelligible reality. The Demon can be seen in "Faust" as in a mirror, and in glancing into it we behold our Darwinian progenitor, the animal, face to face. Before the times of Goethe, with very few exceptions, the Evil Spirit was an entity with whom any one might become familiar in fact, the "spiritus familiaris" of old.

So he called all the Dogs Canis; but for the different kinds we have Canis familiaris, the Domestic Dog, Canis lupus, the Wolf, Canis vulpes, the Fox, etc. In some families of the vegetable kingdom we can appreciate better the application of this nomenclature, because we have something corresponding to it in the vernacular.

His Latin verses might well have been spared. In the translation of Gray's Elegy there is a more than usual crampness; occasioned, perhaps, by his having rendered into hexameters the stanzas of four lines, to which the elegiac measure of the Romans would have been better suited. The Epistola Poetica Familiaris, addressed to his friend Mr. Bamfylde, has more freedom.

All this seemed as simple as a sum in arithmetic, and Victor Alexandr'itch, more scholarum rei familiaris ignarus, without a moment's hesitation expended his ready money in procuring from England a threshing-machine, ploughs, harrows, and other implements of the newest model. The arrival of these was an event that was long remembered.

The long ears of the little pitchers had caught the well-known word. "Why, that's pater familias," piped the little Capricornus. "And mater familiaris," added the little Corona. "You don't mean to say," cried Lady Enid to the Prophet, "that these are the children of Mr. Sagittarius?" The Prophet bent his head. "How very interesting!" said Lady Enid. "Everything is working out most beautifully.
