Cuffe did not quit the deck until the bell struck two, in the middle watch. This made it one o'clock. Yelverton and the master kept the watches between them, but the captain was always near with his advice and orders.

One need only recall the bargainings that occur in the Paston Letters to realize that there was not much romance about their marriages, at any rate beforehand. Thus wrote Sir John Paston in 1473 of a suitor for his sister Anne: 'As for Yelverton, he said but late that he would have her if she had her money; and else not.

"There, he fetches up, by George!" cried Yelverton, the youngest lieutenant; and for a moment it was in truth believed in the frigate that le Feu-Follet, as a breaker actually curled directly under her lee, was aground.

It was a favour which by his advice, as against the King's honour, had been refused to Suffolk; it was a favour which, in a much lighter charge, had by his advice been refused to his colleague Yelverton only a few months before, when Bacon, in sentencing him, took occasion to expatiate on the heinous guilt of misprisions or mistakes in men in high places.

There was indeed, no lack of ability still left in the ranks of the opposition for Burgh, Daly, and Yelverton were there; but for a supreme spirit like Grattan whose burning tongue was ever fed from his heart of fire there is always room in a free senate, how many soever able and accomplished men may surround him. The fall of 1777 brought vital intelligence from America.

Newlyn, and her other guests either bellowed or screamed, with the exception of Yelverton, who was hungry and said little. Brigit sat between him and young Joyselle. It was nice to have the boy next her, but his adoration was too obvious to be altogether comfortable. Freddy Newlyn told some new stories, all delightfully vulgar; Carron gave a realistic résumé of a recent French play.

When the other boats were ready, the two that were on the outside of the ship pulled off to seaward a short distance, to look about them in that direction; while the two others, hearing the oars of the light gig in which Yelverton was glancing ahead, followed the sound, under the impression that they were in pursuit of the yawl.

Yelverton was so eager in the chase, that he kept his eyes riveted before him, fancying from time to time that he saw the boat ahead, and he passed within a hundred and fifty yards of the yawl, without in the least suspecting her vicinity.

As it was impossible to get the Ruby through the barrier, Captain Yelverton ordered her other boats to return towards Stralsund, the enemy's riflemen, who followed along the banks, being kept off by their fire. Unhappily, an explosion took place on board the Arrogant's second cutter, by which the midshipman commanding her, Mr Storey, was killed, and the boat was swamped.

At six in the morning, the jury, not a man of whom by this time was sober, returned into court with a verdict of guilty, recommending the prisoner at the same time in the strongest manner to mercy. Next day Orr was placed at the bar, and sentenced to death by Lord Yelverton, who, it is recorded, at the conclusion of his address burst into tears.
