This portion of the staff was coated over with some slimy substance the same that covered the rocks around and this rendered it as slippery as one of the greased poles that I had seen at merry-makings in our village. It cost me several attempts and failures before I could get above the watermark; but the rest was more easy, and I soon reached the top of the staff.
By one of those hidden and unaccountable processes of the human brain, the association of ideas recalled to Colwyn's mind where he had previously seen the peculiar watermark of waving lines visible on the piece of paper he had picked up at the brink of the pit that afternoon: it was the Government watermark of the first issue of War Treasury notes.
I took up my pen, drew a sheet of paper from my writing-desk, and fixed my eyes upon that; 't was all in vain; I saw nothing on it but the watermark, D. Ames. I laid down the pen, closed my eyes, and threw my head back in the chair. "Are you waiting to be shaved, Sir?" said a familiar voice. I started up, and overturned my servant. "No, blockhead!"
The remains which do become embedded, if in sand or gravel, will when the beds are upraised generally be dissolved by the percolation of rain-water. I suspect that but few of the very many animals which live on the beach between high and low watermark are preserved. The molluscan genus Chiton offers a partially analogous case.
This new contour, of the same level with the one showing the limit of the depression, shows on the drawing the round island. Drop in a second clod, this time long and narrow, the watermark will be like figure 10, and the drawing of it, properly placed, will show another island of another shape. Your drawing now will look like figure 11.
And I've copied out this form " She was hardly conscious of his laying papers on the table before her. "It's valid, as I've fixed things. The lawyer gave me some paper. It has a watermark five years old. I've dated back two years quite enough. So when we've signed, the marriage never could be contested not even by ourselves." He took the papers from the table, laid them in her lap. She started.
I could not account for the Treasury watermark, designed to prevent forgery of the notes, appearing on a piece of blank paper. Then it came to me. The first issue of Treasury notes were very badly printed. Ordinary black ink was used, which would disappear if the note was immersed in water. It was an official at Somerset House who told me this.
If he tired of consulting these guides, he could rest his eyes by gazing at the chronometers and sea compasses, the sextants, field glasses and cards strewn on a table on which stood a single volume, bound in sealskin. The book was "The Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym", specially printed for him on laid paper, each sheet carefully selected, with a sea-gull watermark.
He carried it to the window and held it against the sunlight, but there was not even a watermark by which it might be traced. Nor was there anything in the few straightforward sentences that proved suggestive. The letter ran: Your granddaughter has reached an age at which her maintenance and education require serious consideration.
The dry wells, and the wells with water far below the former watermark, bear testimony to the good days of the past and the evil days of the present. Wherever the native vegetation has been allowed to remain, as, for instance, here and there around a sacred temple or imperial burying ground, there are still huge trees and tangled jungle, fragments of the glorious ancient forests.
